"Steam isn't that bad, because I have an extremely unusually good set-up, so that makes it okay for EVERYONE. Even the people who connect to the internet via pigeon mail."

I'm not going to bother with Steam unless I absolutely have to. I'm happy with the way I have everything set up currently.

Actually, there IS a protocol that uses pidgeons to deliver packets.

steam just is too loaded.... whoops within 2 minutes i crash >< gj valve.... i think they should have kept their mouths shut until they had a fully functional version and LOADS of bandwith... millions of people trying to d/l everything prob doesnt take too good with them.... BTW Grimm you WILL have to go to Steam.. otherwise you will never be able to play HL games.. they are gonna start shutting down WON servers (the ones you connect to, to play MP) so they are literally forcing everyone to d/l that pos... not a very good strategy :\

Heh. I remember the old three-foot sneakernet. Had an implementation of it at home. Four machines on it. High-bandwidth, high latency packet switching. Though I was happy with it at the time, especially after initially converting it from 320 burst mode to 720 rigid mode.

Ah yes, good ol' RFC 1149: A Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers.

    <a href='http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1149.html' target='_blank'>http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1149.html</a>

OBTW, If you didn't notice, its an April Fools joke from 1990.

EDIT: Since most of you won't bother to read it, I'll post a sample

Multiple types of service can be provided with a prioritized pecking
order.  An additional property is built-in worm detection and
eradication.  Because IP only guarantees best effort delivery, loss
of a carrier can be tolerated.  With time, the carriers are self-

regenerating.  While broadcasting is not specified, storms can cause
data loss.  There is persistent delivery retry, until the carrier
drops.  Audit trails are automatically generated, and can often be

(It has been implemented too, at least once. Great packet loss and a high latency, though.)

As far as I understood the packet loss was minimal, but the latency made sure it wasn't going to be mainstream any time soon.

I hear they're currently working on breeding super pigeons for power users.
