Ok I Got Ns Running With Steam
I did a clean install of NS 2.0 to C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\
\Half Life\
You can't run NS from the server browser it tries to run NS using counter strike, I had to run it from ASE where it runs it with HL.
This seamed kinda weird to me but it seams steam sets halflife up as a stand alone even if you have CS retail (like I do)
Then once the game starts set ex_maxerrordistance to an alias. I.e. alias "ex_maxerrordistance" "say yay I fixed it"
Hope this Helps

Go to the second page to find a link from teamttm, posted by Javert and SinSpawn. This will enable cs1.6 and HL play without downloading off of steam *about 1/4 speed of your connection :S*

Actually, I run cs retail and won still works fine for me, I haven't touched steam yet.

The problem is Valve is going to be shutting down the WONid system, so you'll have to upgrade to steam.

can you give us some more details as to how you set up ASE?
ie directory changes in the settings etc
there is no logic in that.

because we're going to have to in a matter of weeks and i'd like to famliarize myself with it.
i've got hl and cs running, and im interested in seeing how ns runs in it
is it because of that won thing gonna be gone soon?
*TIP*: don't respond to this money. im not inviting a flame war, im instructing you to STOP POSTING
Then just keep playing the non-steam version until Steam is fixed... It's not rocket science...
And as with the NS crashing once started, its the maxerrordistance thing.

Oh, steam was working fine yesterday for me, but now I click the games tab and it crashes.... woop
Anyway, yes, doing an install to the halflife folder in your eMail directory seems to do the trick. The steambrowser works if you go into the game first (via the "games" menu), and then find your server from there. I found out that I can even copy over my old config and autoexec files. Score!
I think it's because you need to log-out manually, but Im not quite sure... you can always ctrl+alt+del and end the process, then it should work(better).
