<div class="IPBDescription">Online Petition</div> I noticed all you forumgoers venting your anger towards Steam, so I thought this would help.

<a href='http://www.petitiononline.com/nosteam/petition.html' target='_blank'>Say NO! to Steam!</a>

Its an online petition fighting Valve's intent to put everything on the Steam program. Theres already nearly 19,000 signatures.

P.S. Sorry for adding another "Steam"-entitled thread to the already abundant flow, but I felt this would be very useful to people.

    "Oh..a lot of people are against this? If History taught us anything, it's that online petitions always work ! Lets shut Steam down".

    are you people completely ignorant to the details behind this?

    <b>THEY ARE SHUTTING DOWN WON. THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT</b>

    and another stupid poll petition or 15 page long hate-thread isnt going to change that

    as far as i know, ns doesnt work on steam.

    so if you want to continue playing it for more then 2 more weeks, i suggest you put down your signiture.

    otherwise, go play warcraft of something.

    NS does/will work FINE on Steam.

    I for one will not sign this stupid petition. The change is coming, LIVE WITH IT.

    I see nothing wrong with Steam, other than the "growing pains" that they are experiencing over the first few days. Once network performance is back up to snuff and everything is working fine, and everybody has been using Steam for a while, I predict many of the complainers will dissapear.

    You people are just **** off because it's not working NOW. Well I have some advice for you; DON'T USE IT! There's nothing stopping you from continuing to use WON until the network problems are resolved.

    Theres nothing wrong with steam... i got it to run NS perfectly, and im enjoying my counter-strike at blissful speeds. If you have some patience and tweak with it, and experience steam like it was intended, i think you might respect its potential. =/ I am just VERY dissapointed that they would try and put spyware on a necessary program, that really lowers my opinion of valve...

    it was released last night you schizophrenic clod

    its not like flayra threw his hands in the air and decided to stop all future development for ns, they will release a fix in the near future, steam isnt the end of NS like you're so idiotically implying

    They don't need to get rid of it. They need to <b>FIX</b> it, and fast!

    Nobody cares about online petitions.

    If you want to show your dissatisfaction with their business decisions, don't buy their products. It's that simple.

    Yeah, if you don't like Steam, don't pay for it. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Mark my words. In a month or two everyone will be saying Steam is the shiznit and acting like they don't remember that any of this foolishness took place.

    I havn't even downloaded Steam yet, so I don't really know if I would have any problems with it. At the moment, I'm nuetral on the fight for/against Steam, I actually still use the regular Half-Life server broswer, and I'm happy with how it is now. I just thought that people out there would find the link useful.
  • DubbilexDubbilex Chump Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9799Members
    Yeah...I'm not signing it. As long as I can continue playing with my <b>legitimate copy</b> of half-Life, I don't mind at all.

    I can already tell that many, many Steam-haters only are angry on account of the fact that thy don't have their own copy of Half-Life. Embrace the change - it will eventually become smooth as ever, anbd you'll live longer.

    I implore you all - don't add to the terrible crash of morinic online opinion that this petition represents. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    uh , a better explanation?? :x

    This is as much as I know: steam allows you to play a mod/game as you download it.

    Do we have to pay for it?
    Do we HAVE to use it?
    ... ?

    The NS dev team needs to make a patch for Steam, then it will work.

    Steam in its essense is a needed facelift for halflife !!! but the network is slow because of the demand right now. So just give it some time and everything will be good.

    I would rather they fix steam instead of scrapping all the work they did on it and going back to the WON system.

    Did any of you actually read that petition?

    It is horribly written and addresses the wrong issues. Steam allows custom skins. But alas, the petition eludes to speculation. SPEC-U-freaking-LATION!!!!

    and you are actually stupid enough to associate yourself with it?
    Please exercize some common sense when signing something, and try using that same level of common sence when trying to get others to rally along side you.

    56k is over, deal with it, move on and pay up. Of all the issues steam is having right now, required connection speed is not one of them. None of the next gen games will play on 56k, and HL2 is a next gen game. Time to play catch up. Perhaps you should sign a petition telling game developers not to use DX9 scince it discriminates against voodoo card users.

    I've spent the last 4 hours trying to get Steam running even basic halflife. I've lost EVERY CUSTOM THING I'VE EVER MADE for halflife. I'm 10 seconds from punching my fist through the wall.

    EDIT: It's 3 AM. 5 hours.

    ok

    me = smarter then the tool who wrote that pettiotion

    1) the cover letter is STUPID! it adress NOTHING REAL! again, pure spam.
    2) the twit got a 'make your own petition' site that alows people to post multiple times from the same place (note that about 1/2 of them are te same person saying 'STEAM SUX asdga'

    I would Like to create an ACTUAL petition:
    1) A GOOD cover letter, if some one could make one up for me (I suck at writing but I will suplie the PROPER points)
    2) A DECENT PROGIE that will alow:
    a) Once some one has posted from an IP the can not sign again
    b) the ability to del STUPID signitures (I would rather have 100 good inelegent sigs than 17K stupid people)

    as for the actual problems:
    1) The steam servers seem unable to keep up with the demand
    2) The 'create a steam account' has a tendency to freeze up on transfering files (thus messing some things up rather horribly)
    3) counter intuitive, no decent help out there (save comunity members who puzzled it out)
    4) The server browser is honestly worse then nearly all 3rd party browsers
    5) No documentation (no one knows just how to install most things. Only place I could find it was on steampowered.com, wich was dead for the past few days)

    Now for things I have learned:
    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Does Steam upload information or files from my computer? Is Steam Spyware?

    Nothing gets uploaded from users' machines to Steam other than account login information and other server communication/protocol information. We transfer no files from the client to the Steam system.

    Some users have seen non-Steam related information (like names of private files on their computer) show up inside their Steam cache files, raising privacy concerns. This is actually a result of the way Windows handles files. The cache file gets created on the client using the Windows CreateFile() command. This command will create the file but not initialize it. Due to the large size of the file, we don't bother initializing the empty data blocks in it as this can take an appreciable amount of time. On NTFS machines, files created with this method happen to have the property of appearing empty (initialized to zero) but for FAT32 machines, it shows up as whatever old data was sitting on drive in the sectors that just got allocated for the cache. The people that are reporting this behavior are actually seeing old data from their hard drives. It's never uploaded or even looked at by the client. Eventually, as they download more data, it gets written over.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    for Steam to work:
    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The following ports must be "open":
    UDP 1200
    UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive
    TCP 27030 to 27039 inclusive<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->How do I stop Steam from running automatically when I start my computer?

    From the Steam icon in the notification tray, select Settings. Switch to the Interface tab, and uncheck the box that says "Run Steam when Windows starts".<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    And the one you ALL want:
    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->How do I install and use mods in Steam?

    If you have a Half-Life mod installed before installing Steam, Steam will automatically convert and install the game for you. It will then be accessible in the Steam "My Games" list under "Third Party Games."

    If you want to add a mod after installing Steam, you need only to put it in the Steam/SteamApps/your_email_address/Half-Life directory. The next time you open the "My Games" list it will be listed under "Third Party Games."<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    1.) Half life, CS and DoD is the largest gaming community on the planet...Nothing can keep up with that kind of demand. Remember when CS 1.4 came out? Even though we had SEVERAL places to get the file from...demand was so high that even the lesser know networks were saturated by Downloads, Fileplanet had million minute wait times and so on. It was days before everyone was updated. Fact is, no system can handle the demand put on it when a community this large jumps on all at once to DL Hundreds of MBs.

    We have been dealing with this kind of overload all along, hell, it happened when the HL2 movies were released during E3 to an extent. The diference being, HTTP and FTP are mature and stable, compared to the virgin steam...its a new program and obviously has its flaws to be worked out. Most of the lag and problems with steam seem to be bugs with the steam client/server protocol and the steam client itself, not with available bandwidth. More bandwidth wont hurt, but I think thats the least of our problems.

    2.)See above.

    3.) Steam only came out of beta what, 2 days ago? Valve has always been far better than most developers in providing documentation and support for thier products. Give them some time, they have alot to deal with right now. They must be as suprized and frustrated by many of the bugs/problems as we are. It wasnt a great release to say the least...I'd rather they work through that first, give us documentation later.

    4.) Dont use it, they arent obligated to provide you with a server browser, 3rd party browsers will still work. Take your pick. Its almost exactly the same as the old in-game browser. This is a preference anyway...certianly not a "problem" by any means.

    5.) Same as # 3.

    I must say, I dont see anything here that would warrant a petition, especially one as well thought out. Petitions and protests are not a way to have your personal opinions heard. That comment is not directed at you Thansal, but its obvious by that petition site that people think thats what they are for.

    Patience is a virtue, and hastily made descision are always bad ones, <i>especially</i> those made out of anger or frustration. It would be a shame to think you are smart enough to think it through and not even be patient enough to give them time to sort things out.

    right, forgot to put in one part <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I don't want steam to die and go away. I simply want the Won servers to stay up untill they have a much better product.

    I STILL can not get steam to work (curently hitting he 'our servers are over loaded and thus we can't let you play' msg aka "This game is currently unavailable")

    despite following various explenations on how to get NS to work I still can't

    Honestly I am sorta disapointed in them for this go.
    Look, they know (or should know) that they are the largest frikn onlingame there is, A release like this is (in my mind) realy BAD craftsmanship. there was no manual or FAQ shiped with the client installer (despite having a FAQ online)
    The code still seems very buggy and unstable
    the creating steam acount thing frozen when transfering files about on MY COMPUTER, nothing to do with their servers!
    Steam also seems to painfuly slow my computer down (I meen as far as I can tell it is not that complex of a program yet it takes nearly a min to start up and then like 30 secs to do anytihng when I click buttons).

    Again, I think that steam MIGHT work, however this release was very poorly done
    they know just WTH we can do to servers (screw slash bomb, we HLBomb stuff <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->), I would have expected them to have gotten ALLOT of extra servers on a temporary baises (just so things go smoothly)

    again, over all I was just severly unimpressed by the release and I am afraid of WHEN they will be killing our WON servers (fun note, alot of people still DON'T KNOW ABOUT STEAM!)

    the fun part is if you read the signatures there's actually more people signing it because they don't like the 1.6 version of Counterstrike than anything to do with steam itself <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Woa woa woa! Backup the train! Are you telling me HL w/Steam won't be able to run through my firewall unless I knock a hole in it?!

    I think thats wahts making most people so angry about this, Valve is changing all the rules. You sudenly need a better system to run HL, more bandwith, and if the above is true, a hole in your firewall.
