its making me sick
this is my second rant topic, the first one being about those chamber wars of, hopefully, late.
well the flames are gonna be coming for this one, but i dont really care. if you dont wanna read this just click the add reply button and post "steam sux, just like mage" and you will be duly ignored. [/intro]
i need someone from the original steam beta to back me up, where are you [forumgoer who beta'd with me]?
if anyone had seen the first release of steam, that horrible green program that diddnt run properly, required days to update, multiple restarts, gave severa fatal errors, used gigabytes of hd space and 110% of your available ram
anyone who went through that beta can appreciate what steam is now. and i for one like it, solely because i had to go through that green, beta, hell.
oh yeah, steam also decided to lauch itself all the time, kept screwing around with your friends list and made your power light change color (one of the above is false)
in short:
steam now is much better than it was and i hope that you thank all that is holy for not putting you through that green, buggy mess called a program

ok, lets start a list (I like lists)
1) Just b/c you 'lived through' the horible begining of steam DOES NOT MAKE YOU BETTER.
2) Just b/c Steam ussed to suck more then it does now does not make it so that we should be hapy that we didn't have to deal with that.
3) There was a beta, why didn't they beta test to the point where it worked before stating 'every one has to switch or else you wont be able to play'
4) Have you gotten steam working? Most people on the forums have not. And if you have why are you not helping the rest of us out?
5) the Steam release was a horrible horrible event to watch (And participate in):
No documentation (b/c the webby was dead)
a program that can't switch servers it looks at with out a reboot of windows (just figgured this one out)
Not even the idea of providing exrat servers just for the release (that woulda been a good one)
Not (untill a day after) actualy ussing the mirrors they set up to release anything other then a 3 second DL
Again, the release was garbage, the program is still rather broken, and I am scared they will kill the won servers bbefore fixxing everything.
see, I didn't flame you
Oh yeah, and the only problem I've had with steam is it crashed ONCE when I hit 'Games'. And it tried to reinstall the games again, don't know why. Weird.
Odd. Sometimes that happens to me. I'll click Steam... Wait... Get bored, go play with regular WON (see, it is possible!), and then all of a sudden in the middle of my game the steam menu pops up.

i never said i was better, i just said steam used to suck a lot more than i does now
if you want the beta back, be my guest
thats their call
i dont know what i did to make it work, just install wait then restart.
- if you use steam consistantly you will notice a decrease in errors and load times (even without updates for some odd reason)
you shoulda seen the beta server load, peaked at 0.5kb/s, left the thing on overnight
i agree
i agree again

[edit] is it just me or do i hear intelligent discussion? [/edit]
In actuality, it seems like everyone's just jumping on the anti-steam bandwagon. It works really well when it works, and it's really innovative. Give it some time, and if you can't have some patience, then don't bother downloading Steam ever, it would be better off filtering the people from the community who don't have to patience to wait a couple days to play video games, or have to deal with something that's sub-perfect.
so intelligence does exist in the world...
1) NO games are going to be strict pay-to-play. There will be one TYPE of pay-to-play payment plan, and they're doing a good job of making it non-evil.
2) Gabe Newell is not greedy. If you think of the original Half-Life... All the money invested in to it pretty much came out of HIS OWN BANK ACCOUNT.
The problem is, I don't think anyone here knows what their talking about ?
What does Steam have to do with Pay-To-Play ? Right now it's not. If they [/i]EVER[/i] wanted to, they simply would do it already. Everquest did, Planetside did. It's not like the technology was absent to make it P2P.
In fact, I think most people who say "Steam sucks" is just being a tool of community opinion. You can tell by the immense amounts of complaints, rarely with any true technical reason other than "It's slow, it's buggy".
I never said it was perfect, but the whole community needs to act mature about it, be quiet, and wait for the fixes. If worse comes to worse, you've gotten 5 years out of a fantastic game if you can't just wait.
What i really dislike about steam is that i have to download counter-strike, a game i have not played since beta 6 (over 2.5 years?) just so i can play NS. I don't like seeing "Counter Strike needs updating" when i go to play NS. I also don't like the fact that i've wasted the last 2 days trying to get it working.
I love the games in friends though they rock! (no, no sarcasm, i actualy find them quite fun).
950 mbits of bandwidth for 100,000+ people is kinda poor.
I am against steam in the beta like state it is in now, but will be all for it when it works. Like i said, i love the idea, just not the quality level it is at now.
has any one HEARD an OFFICAL response ase to when the WON servers die?
I am honestly still scared, I lost alot of confidence in Valve when they pulled this 'release', its just that shody that I realy am afraid they might pull something silly like killing WON before they need to.
Yep, even you, that should be a period, not a question mark .
Just put a model folder in the mod folder...
for example, custom models for CS would go in
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Custommodelguy@Iliekpie.com\counter-strike\cstrike\models
and HL would be
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Name_here@you_eediot.com\half-life\valve\models
and for sprites, a sprites folder. Sounds, a sounds folder. I'm assuming due to this system, if you were to use custom models, and join a server with mp_consistancy 1, it would just switch to the cached models.
Also, for anyone who wants their Hi-res models back from HLsp.. Extract them out of pak1.pak in the old HL file... Using pakscape or some equivallant of that
and for anyone who needs nice big pictures in their explainations: Go here

The Official statement is that when Steam gets perfectly running for a few weeks, they will shut down WON. We don't have much to worry about. The only problem with Steam is that they underestimated the server load. Half-life has at least half a million players (30,000 cs servers, average 16 players at a time, and the players don't play all the time.) No number of servers can handle 500,000 people downloading 400 mb files.
THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH STEAM RIGHT NOW IS THE SERVERS
Gee willerckers, is that all? Just that one small little thing?
I woulda thought that to be a big problem, but apprenently you have shown me otherwise.
please note that the motivation behind this thread was an attempt to combine steam and intelligent discussions.
to assist the mods in moderating this thread i would like to request that all intelligent posters click the reply button at the bottom of this page, or the quote button above posts, and that unintelligent posters please click the [x] at the top of your browser to reply, thank you.

Hey there. Just want to say... Great work on Steam. Don't give in to the whiners, ever. Steam is a needed change. However, just a small suggestion... Maybe you could program a plugin system for the server browser and Friends? That would let people customize things how they wish, and perhaps even let third-party programs like ASE and HLSW to integrate with Steam.
Erik Johnson says:
Yeah, we're going to do that.
Thanks for the message.

EDIT, the thing that is the most frustrating, is the total lack of support from valve to help me with the problems I have. There is a poor FAQ on the steam website and apart from that they have done nothing.
Although I have had no problems at all with the Steam and CS cache dled. just uninstalled the old. deleted registry stuff and i was playin in minutes. although CS1.6 sucks simply because CS sucks.
that should make u feel better.

Where in that post did I say bandwidth was little? I said it was the only one. That and maybe a few crashes.
Make something better, deliver it to over 100,000 people through a few servers at one time, rushed due to another release coming soon, and expect everyone to embrace it, cheer, and bounce happily. Then complain.

apperently nobody seems to get this ... why?

Because they can't see why its being done in the first place? Sure, for HL2 it makes sense... but why force HL1 users into it?
...of course all the misinformation going around doesn't help either....
