steam is the new system, right now it is buggy and very difficult to install with NS. many people are flaming and ranting about it.
i got it to work with some graphical glitches ingame, so we knwo it is possible. i'm complaining that it takes about 2 gigs of hd space, but steam incorporates a handy friend-finder.
People are apperntly VERY VERY angry with steam, not sure why, i think they just want something to complain about, but yeah it just came out, its not required, but people will still complain about it, best just to ignor them

Not 2 gigs. Just if you install EVERYTHING (aka: DoD, CS, TFC, Ricochet, and all the other mods it has available). Mine takes up just about 30-50MB more than my standard Half-Life folder does.
Hopefully they'll fix the bugs before WON dies, or I'll have to *hope* I can get into a game of NS, rather than just going and finding one.
Half the problem is no bandwidth, the other half is when 7 million people or whatever use a program, yes, many will be mad <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I mean, one my steam got bandwidth avaliable, everything ran fine, no lockups. It just always locked up before (or seemed to) when doing stuff that required it to talk to Steam servers.

no commie, it aint only the bwidth
Some rather disgusting probs with the steam release:
1) It takes a reboot to change servers you are connected to (so if it pickes a dead one, time ot reboot) 2) The copting of HL over to steam stuff dosn't work (as I have heard this was actualy never beta tested) 3) The no children error (I don't know what causes that, but it aint the servers b/c it hapens after steam dies) 4) The fact that it takes about 5-10 mins for steam to load on my comp (thats between 2x clicking the ico and it poping up the first menu) 5) The fear of the Won servers being killed before Steam works reliably 6) the general shody launch (not enugh servers, not releasing the fully updated version alongside the unupdated sone so the demand could be spread as far as possible, their sight being dead so no one could see the FAQ, no documentation incluided with it, etc etc)
