<div class="IPBDescription">how to prepare</div> Hi all.

My first post <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Gotta start out by saying that NS is simply outstanding. I have been playing massive amounts of Counter-strike for the past 2? years now, and after less than 15 hours of online NS I am hooked. God that was heaven sent. And made it blatantly apparent how bad I needed a change from CS. Think that I may never return...

Well back to my question. I have only been playing as a marine, as it seemed the most easy way to get started. But I have not dared to take the commander seat yet. I have been temted many times, as there seems to be no one who wish to be one. And when somebody finally chooses to be a commander, ?-1 minute of valuable time has been lost.

But I would like to be a little prepared before my first go. But how/where can one practise? Do I just start a LAN game with myself or find an empty server. Or is there a better way. Perhaps something like a manual?
I have read all of the manual found on <a href='http://www.natural-selection.org/' target='_blank'>http://www.natural-selection.org/</a>

PS. lots of spelling errors... I know don't flame me Im from Denmark <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Ahhh.... seemed I just had to explore this forum a bit more. Found a few guides here.

    Is there a hp somewhere where you can get a pic of the different maps and explore them?

    1: Know the tech tree
    2: Know the maps (optional, really, but it helps)
    3: Have some experience as a grunt
    4: Have some experience with other RTSs.
    5: Read Sun Tsu's The Art of War. Trust me on this <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    6: Relocating isn't everything, but phases are.

    My advice:

    1) Relocating is for experienced comms. -Relocate in a daft place and you've lost. Roughly secureing a base and making a larger one in a hive is easier.

    2) The tech tree is pretty basic, so just remember you need a turret factory (tf) to electrify, an upgraded tf to siege, and an upgraded armoury now. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> All heavy weapons come from that upgraded armoury. Phasing also needs researching from Obs. The advanced&arms lab upgrades are rather obvious.

    3) Play as alien if you have not already done so since your post. IMHO, it is far easier to be head gorge than the comm. Skulks can also rack up kills far easier than marines. It's much more fun too.

    4) My opinion is my own, and that applies to everyone. As such what I or others say may not suit you and your style of play. This is important when assessing conflicting advice.

    5) My knowledge of China's history is a bit limited. I only got an A at GCSE. Still, I know that Sun Tsu was a great military leader for the Communist side of things. What about Xou Enlai and Mao Se Tung? They were ok afaik. Please excuse spellings, but there are two conflicting reforms that I am aware of, so they tend to merge.
    Tell us of this book Scorpian. Out of interest, how many times is 'Skulk' mentioned? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Finally, welcome to Natural Selection, and don't worry about your spelling. No-one else does. Anyone who can spell 'assessing' without breaking into a sweat is not to be trusted... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The Art of War's quite well known; a quick Google came up with <a href='http://classics.mit.edu/Tzu/artwar.html' target='_blank'>this</a>. Sun Tsu was quiiiite a bit earlier than Communism (he was around when wars were still fought with chariots and armour and stuff). Nonetheless he was a brilliant strategist - a lot of The Art of War is still relevant, and a lot of it is relevant to RTSs. Well, maybe not the parts about the morale of the peasantry, and how to deal with interference from the sovereign (and no, there's no mention of skulks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->) but there's some excellent advice in there.
    ...

    The anime SBEmail used to be in my sig, actually (where do you think the blue hair in my avatar's from? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->)

    Thanks for the replys. I guess that with NS like CS the mantra should be:

    practise
    practise
    practise

    Sun Tzu eh... well my mind has been made up. If I may I quote Sun Tzu... "The Commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerely, benevolence, courage and strictness."

    Dosen't sound to bad <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Gotta ask you again. Is there a HP where you can study the different NS maps <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    "I know that Sun Tsu was a great military leader for the Communist side of things"

    Wow, I read that and was surprised. As someone said, he was quite a bit before Communist China - by a good thousand years even <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    For map overviews,
    <a href='http://www.nonoobs.com' target='_blank'>http://www.nonoobs.com</a> click on the compendium, then the commander's guide. There's some decent advice in there (some I wrote myself for the guy who made the website), as well as other experienced commanders thoughts.
    In addition, I do believe they've got overhead views for at least the new maps.

    Last I hear, the OldF community was offering "lessons" on their server, both for aliens, marines and prospect commanders. You'll have experienced peopl eguiding you, can't go wrong there <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
