We all need to play ns together!

Let's make the arrangements now!
I've read other threads and it seems like a lot of people are complaining about what they think will happen on public servers. I was also thinking that I've gotten to 'know' a lot of people here, and it would be cool to play against all of you in a game of NS once it is released.

I suggest that we arrange to setup an NS server, and password it. We'll put the password in the forums here, or just have a thread where people ask for the password, and someone PS's them with it.

So, I need to know who would like to play NS with other forum regulars, and who would be able to host the server. Let's hear it!

Oh, wait, that wasnt a very helpful comment. Lets see what I can come up with. Yes, I agree to this, it would be nice to play with people I know, and hence the reason for both EC and certain IRC arrangements.

However, I also feel that just limiting the 'vets' to specific servers will split the community, and as such I think it is all of our duty to play on publics and help the new players. NS teamplay will not go downhill if we all help out to teach and look after new members.

Im up for it. And i think hes just talking about playing a couple of games as soon as the mod is released. I mean, wouldnt you be kind of mad if NS was suddenly released and then you found that all the servers are full and you cant play?

Heh im up for it, just PM me whenever it is we do it and ill be there for sure.

Yeah, I was thinking as more of a 'release party' thing. Not as a constant, only that server thing.

Fam, I don't really have time for a squad, but would love to have a game with people here every now and again. I look forward to beating PT's. ;P

I think we will all need to try to lead the public servers, once it gets popular. Speaking of which, I need to remember to use this bit of goodness:

bind p "say RTFM! RTFM! R-T-F-M!!!!

^Darkness has a point.. It will be really bad for us "outsiders" from other places...
I'm from Israel.. and I know my pings to the US range from 200~ to 500~

umm, me is coming from germany, and our adsl is very slow (because we have no fastpath, there is a special protocol, called interleaving which streches the datas), and so i woudl have a big of 400 or so, this would seriously ...

Hm... well, we could have a North America server, and European server. It all depends on who can get us a server where.

Haha. If having a ping of 200+ makes it so you cannot play the game I really feel sorry for you.

I'm going to make Debaser a public server for a little while after the release. It's a small-load server, maxplayers 20. After the game has some public momentum, I'm going to switch it back to private for the old-timers to play on.

OOoh! Someone has a server! Yaaay!

Can you give me any details now? Is it a dedicated server? What connection is it running on? Physical location, IP address?

I'm certainly up for this. By the way, does anyone know what the news is on that proposed NSF server?

Indeed. Organized games would r0xx0r$ my b0xx0r$. Who's gonna give out details and stuff? A playtester? Specific person?

Doesn't have to be a PT... just anyone with a server!
  • alius42alius42 Join Date: 2002-07-23 Member: 987Members
An initial few games of IRC and forum bums would be great. maybe we could rent a server for a day using something like pay-pal? And all pitching in a little bit.

I have played SI with some of the guys in IRC and they are all fun to play with even when my ping is 200-300. It does kind of make it less fun when you get flush entity packets every once in a while but as long as you are playing with good people it is okay and all good. So... yay! release party! Although I can't host a server I'll be sure to come and play with you guys. oh and pleeeese don't release NS while I am on vacation cause then I'll be left behind:( and feel all left out and sad. /me cries

One thing I'm sure I may say about pings in NS: Don't worry.

I've usually got 300 - 500 to the testserver, but still can play with barely any lag. If there's one thing that went right from day one of the PTs, it's surely the netcode.

Connection: T1, shared with the rest of a high school.

    Location: Sheffield, Massachussetts, USA.

    OS: SOL (Server Optimized Linux).

    Dedicated?: yes.

Ip: sorry, not yet, but in early september (the 7th or 8th probably). You will be able to get it by pinging debaser.berkshireschool.org , and I'll list it too.

DrunkenBozo, that sounds good... would you be able to get a server up before September 7, though? In the even that NS is released sooner?

A T1 in a high school should do nicely, especially on evenings and weekends.

/me thinks about setting a server up on his high-school's T1 line...

    hehe.

I may be able to get a box up for cable game,s probably no more that 6 people w/o lag, but thats enough for some quick games I guess.

3v3 is seldom going to be a satisfying NS game... PTs have found 4v4 to be about the minimum. That's not to say small games don't work... they're like S&I - they *sometimes* work.
  • f3rretf3rret Join Date: 2002-05-29 Member: 686Members
Legionnaired, cable users use MORE bandwidth than modem people. If you don't have much upstream bandwidth to give, then it would be best to make it a modem-only game.

I know i have'nt been a member or the forums as logn as most people have been nor do i have a huge post count.

Still I'd like to be a part of all this.

A friendly and cooparating community will be a good community, and for a great game, we'd want a great community.

Take the FLF community for example, it might be a tad small now, tho but it's a really good community where most players know eachothers.
Playing with people you know, will enchance both gameplay and teamplay greatly.

I meant, have it setup on my cable line..

But yeah, it ould be pretty pathetic. I'll see how much I can push it when it comes out, but I cant see any more than 10 players, even with the dedicated machine.

Yes, my only fear with the release of NS is the possible lack of dedicated servers....On a side not why is it that everyone on these forums plays SI as well?
  • SurgeSurge asda4a3sklflkgh Join Date: 2002-07-14 Member: 944Members
When NS comes out, I'll be sure and keep ICQ open. My number is 158815561.

2 mods i know that have been literally ruined through the well known members of the community avoiding publics and just sticking to their own servers, cs and dod. Lets try and get EVERYBODY interested in it, that way whenever we join a public, we will be playing challenging people and it wont just be the good owning the new. Its a kind of get what you give situation.

I agree with the origianl point, but I also agree with Steppio. We need plenty of public servers to let the new people play, and with groups like the NSF, we can set the example of teamplay to everyone on the servers.
