i think i got that ha one they can all be released if one of them gets two tries, and they shout in order - 1, 2, 3, 4, [someone retrys] but for which one goes first, assume that they all know where their buddys are, and all of them guess using some form of logic
no, if you shout out the wrong color (ie if you guess) you are horribly immolated with a light spraying of napalm followed by chewing by rabid gnats... lets assume they ONLY shout out if they are absolutely sure. and that they shout out immediately.
well then one of them has a 50/50 chance of living ... the other are home free assuming they can tell the difference between "yay im freeee" and "AHHH MY SKIN WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS DOING TO MY SKIN!!! AHHH SOMEBODY SAVE ME FROM THERE SADISTIC ......." *dies painful, agonizing, extended, horrible, flaming death*
By exchanging the upper two parts of the figure, one gets the figure below. This new figure however only shows fourteen men! (If you don't belief what happened here: please print it, cut it, and try it out yourself!)

Only if we do not regard the houses as points, is the problem is solvable. For example, if the owner of house A would allow that one of the connections to C is laid under his house, the following solution is possible:

It is the case that if you took a nail out, the entire thing would fall. Tricky one.
ok, here is the answer to the three couples and the river. for ease of copying it out, Bb will go first, but any couple can go first.
The whole thing happens in 11 moves
1 Bb across 2 B back 3 ac across 4 a back 5 BC across 6 Bb back (<-- this is the halfway point, where you have A couple on one bank, a couple in the boat and a couple on the other bank. once you have got this situation, all you need to do is reflect the moves you have done before) 7 AB across 8 c back 9 ac across 10 B back 11 Bb across

Alternate solution to the painting problem:
Tie the ends of the string to the nails. Rest the painting on said string like a hammock. So long as it isn't stapled to the painting, it'll fall when one is pulled.

but i dont see why one would go out of their way to make a painting fall!?

Well, either it was worded differently and edited later, or I may have misread it the first time. In any case, it could simply be 'attached' with hooks, eyelets, or simple pegs. All of which would accomplish the same goal. Nail comes out, painting goes down. Just posting my alternate solution as the 'canonical' one has already been posted by the riddle-poster.
Okay how about this. You have this huge canyon one mile deep and one mile across. You are standing at one side, and you want to get to the other. You have as much rope as you need. There is nothing to tie the rope to on either side. How do you cross?

It's a lot like the psych experiment where people were put in a room with a bunch of sticks, little bits of string and stuff, and had a sign on the wall stating that the object was to bind all of the sticks together into a bundle, and that <u>everything</u> in the room (literally underlined) was at their disposal. The sign was taped up with a VERY large piece of duct tape. Less than 3% of those tested even noticed the tape, much less used it first off.
Yeah that's called functionalism. People who don't think out of the box only think about objects for their purpose and for nothing else. Ever see an old clothes iron used as a doorstop? They work quite well. If you're one of type of people that see things out of the box, you are an exception to the rule.
i think we are in a agreement then <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

"As much rope as you need" could be as much needed to fill the canyon for you to walk across. i wont say the answer because i dont think people want it ruined?
but if you want a hint..... : the prisoners must think about the other person's reactions when they look at eachothers hats

omg i think i did it and in paint too!!!
tell me if im allowed to post it

simple, isnt it

BTW, I think I know the answer, but that's a WHOLE LOT of rope we're talking about...
and yes that is a WHOLE LOT!
