Hmm. I too prefer WinAmp 2... it doesn't use up half as much memory as the new one (which takes too long to load on my system).

There's not many skins at the moment - until I see one that I like, I'm going to stick with WinAmp 2.

Yeah, and it turned into my default player for media files

Winamp 3 is the devil.
• NovakoalaNovakoala Join Date: 2002-07-17 Member: 962Members, Constellation
It's not as bad as Windows Media Player (any version). If WinAmp 3 is the devil, then WMP is all the evil in the world condensed into a ball.

Accidentally DLing Winamp3 has turned into the biggest headache in the world. Like Jedi said all of the media turns into sound files, so instead of being able to just double click on things you have to open them through whatever program you use. It's ugly, confusing, and I can't use any of the 20+ skins I have for the cool winamp version. /me slaps winamp 3 down.

I couldn't agree more. While that freeform skin does look cool, I'm sticking with v2. V3 just brings up too many problems.

I hate freeform skinning anyway, I actually like things with some order to them, I refuse to even update from 2.7 oyo 2.8 (even though every time I open winamp while connected it reminds me, I'll have to poke to turn that off) because I am happy with the current version, I don't need more crap and stuff added, any more and it's bloatware.

I even hate wmp above the version that comes wiht 98SE because it's bloated too D:

I wish they would just keep media players simple.

Eh... it takes a little getting used to, and it has a few bugs... but I like it. I can't wait for the "Act3scene2" skin to be finished... the beta is *really* pretty but causes some crashes.

As a side note, I absolutely hate programs that change file associations like that without giving you an option in the install or somewhere. It's happened to me before with other programs, and it is one of the most annoyingly frustrating things that can happen. That being said, I never downloaded Winamp, because I prefer Sonique.

The silly thing is, it *does* include the option. Winamp3 is capable of playing most audio formats, some video formats, and even displaying image files... but *my* Winamp3 plays mp3s and m3us (and whatever the Winamp3 version of an m3u is - I forget)... and that's it. No stolen associations, no hassles... it worked fine.

If programs stealing associations bothers you, learn how to change it. Because most programs like Winamp *do* allow you to choose on that kind of thing.

Irritating things in WinAmp3:

- It doesn't keep my place in the playlist! (this is very annoying)
- It takes too long to start up. WinAmp 2 was up almost instantly
- Crossfader (what's the point? At least you can turn it off)
- It uses up way more system resources than WinAmp 2 did

If these are fixed, then I'd use it. I'm okay with freeform skins - provided they're done well and have some semblance of order. And you can clearly see where all the buttons are.

Keep going Nullsoft, I haven't lost faith in you yet...

so how do you change filename associations?
• coilcoil Amateur pirate. Professional monkey. All pance. Join Date: 2002-04-12 Member: 424Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Probably the absolute easiest - and most effective - way to fix it would be uninstall and reinstall... when installing, look through *EVERY* option - check only the ones you want. For instance, my installation can't play movies - I didn't install the files for it.

Otherwise, go to the Preferences menu, under "Media" - there is a list of associated file types. Just de-select the ones you don't want Winamp to play. You may have to reassociate them with their former programs (I had to re-associate wavs with MP).

BTW, here's the skin I'm currently using - at least until Act3scene2 is finished.

*semi-off topic skin rant*

See I don't get using a skin like that.. you can barely even see the play/stop buttons, and every other button is just damned indistinguishable.

I find that 99% of skin makers don't take USEABILITY into account when making their skins. Its crazy.

the *only* good winamp skin that i've seen is BLACK DOWN which is from here. Not as artistic as other skins, but its USABLE. you can see every button, there isn't any of this "cover buttons up for a picture" business. especially not the important buttons (play pause stop foward back load)

i'd *love* it if somebody made a good, USEABLE skin of one of the following:

1) trigun
2) cowboy bebop
3) hellsing
4) warcraft 3
5) anything, just visually pleasing and useable

so uhh yeah...

*end skin rant*

When a skin can cause a crash, that's a sign that things are too complex :P

I will hold off on downloading a new version of WA until it has a built in .avi / .divx player.

Until then, I just don't see any reason to upgrade. The higher system load just turns it into another RealJukebox(eeeew).
