/me sticks with his current version
p.s. i know what freeform skinning means i just wanted to ridicule your bad choice ;)
There's not many skins at the moment - until I see one that I like, I'm going to stick with WinAmp 2.
I couldn't agree more. While that freeform skin does look cool, I'm sticking with v2. V3 just brings up too many problems.
I even hate wmp above the version that comes wiht 98SE because it's bloated too D:
I wish they would just keep media players simple.

If programs stealing associations bothers you, learn how to change it. Because most programs like Winamp *do* allow you to choose on that kind of thing.
- It doesn't keep my place in the playlist! (this is very annoying)
- It takes too long to start up. WinAmp 2 was up almost instantly
- Crossfader (what's the point? At least you can turn it off)
- It uses up way more system resources than WinAmp 2 did
If these are fixed, then I'd use it. I'm okay with freeform skins - provided they're done well and have some semblance of order. And you can clearly see where all the buttons are.
Keep going Nullsoft, I haven't lost faith in you yet...
Otherwise, go to the Preferences menu, under "Media" - there is a list of associated file types. Just de-select the ones you don't want Winamp to play. You may have to reassociate them with their former programs (I had to re-associate wavs with MP).
BTW, here's the skin I'm currently using - at least until Act3scene2 is finished.
See I don't get using a skin like that.. you can barely even see the play/stop buttons, and every other button is just damned indistinguishable.
I find that 99% of skin makers don't take USEABILITY into account when making their skins. Its crazy.
the *only* good winamp skin that i've seen is BLACK DOWN which is from here. Not as artistic as other skins, but its USABLE. you can see every button, there isn't any of this "cover buttons up for a picture" business. especially not the important buttons (play pause stop foward back load)
i'd *love* it if somebody made a good, USEABLE skin of one of the following:
1) trigun
2) cowboy bebop
3) hellsing
4) warcraft 3
5) anything, just visually pleasing and useable
so uhh yeah...
*end skin rant*
When a skin can cause a crash, that's a sign that things are too complex :P
Until then, I just don't see any reason to upgrade. The higher system load just turns it into another RealJukebox(eeeew).
