I am looking to move my server from a shared server to a private server. Im not sure if the machine can hold what i need it to. So Im asking for your guys help.
20 slot server
OC48 connection
1.7 p4 cpu
512 mb ram
AMX
Metamod
HL Ping boster (maybe)
It will be running the new 3.1.1.1 hlds cause of steam. But I need to know if it will be enough to support that many people with out having bad lag spikes. Give me some feed back guys..

20 x 5 (kb) = 100kb/sec
100 x 60 = 6,000kb/min
6000 x 60 = 360,000kb/hour
360000 x 24 = 8,640,000kb/day
8640000 x 30.5 = 263,520,000kb/month (or there abouts)
MB:
263520000/1024 = 257,343.75mb/month
GB:
257343.75/1024 = 251.31gb/month
You may use more, you may use less, all depends on your max rate, this would be with a max rate of 5000 and 20 clients online 24x7.
I would also be cautious about what bandwidth providers you are getting. Comming from a web hosting background, i can understand the absolute importance of quality bandwidth, if you dont have quality bandwidth, you get hpb clients. Definant stay away froms: Cogent and williams, even if they are mixed with others (this means NO RACK SHACK!!!). Also beware of the datacentre, hostany for west are notoriously bad, having the owner living in china, and their cage almost never visited. They also have 1 week+ server setup times, most IP's cannot fully traced, as it times out.
The datacentre may have OC 48 fibre going though it, as the dc im in has OC 192, yet you may have a 1, 10, or 100mbit port. maybe lower... For 20 clients you will want at least a 800kbit port.
So summing up what i have said:
- try and get at least 300gb of quality bandwidth
- quality datacentre, that has good tech support
- check the speed of your port, not just the speed of the fibre in the datacentre.
a 20 player server will use about 40-60% cpu on a 2.4ghz P4, 512mb of ram at end game... just be wary.
Steam uses x.1.2.0, just use the steam tool to update, without extracting any server files. The steam servers seem a little better optimised?
