Or does it seem that more and more companies are sacrificing game playability for flashier graphics?? I swear, I had more fun playing through some old school 8 bit NES games lately then I did with The Bouncer on PS2.
The Bouncer is a terrible game. It is freakishly short but one of the better looking PS2 games. Don't buy it, and if you must rent it go to a seedy place and rent it for $.99 for one night, you'll get bored with it soon after you get it in your PS2.
Actually, I bought The Bouncer when it first came out, before any reviews had even been published. I mean, GTA 3 was excellent, and it wasn't that great graphically. Half Life is another good example of my point. Companies don't need to be all flashy with the graphics. A game should be defined by how it plays, as opposed to how it looks.
let me point out that when half-life came out it WAS the best looking graphical game out there. and its still the same single player game these 4 years later, they didn't change it or anything :P
(mp didn't really take off till months after HL's release though heh)
hl is the most popular online game coz of the mods valve supported a lot the mods.... so hl became a popular mod game and then a lot of good mods came out, and when cs became so pupular hl went to the sky hl its like having 999999 games in 1.. thats why its so popular...
Wow....I figured people would probably roast me for posting my views on this. From my limited scope of comprehension, it looks like everyone's kind of agreed with my point. Of course, thats my opinion. I could be wrong.
half-life was the #1 seller first because it was groundbreaking singleplayer, the epic likes of which had never been done before. And (in my opinion) not since either.
HL was selling like hotcakes LONG before there were many mods for it. CS didn't come out till I think well over a year after HL was released.
"A lot of mods" really only means "counter-strike". You can speculate all you like or call it the spawn of Satan, but Counter-Strike was the vital key to Half-Life's success. There wasn't a big boom in players until Counter-Strike came out, around beta 5-6 it dominated the servers and the players (and it still does), which is also why Valve "brought out" Counter-Strike and released it as a retail game.
Bah, from my point of view Half-life remains the best game ever made, I remember all the parts in HL like I lived through it It's the storyline as well as the graphics that made it so good, and it was popular before CS. I don't know if anyone else has seen this, but I have an old video clip advertising the original HL, it's scientists were a whole lot goofier, and it actually had player shadows in it as far as I can tell, it also has interviews of the HL team.
Plus, Half-Life doesn't require an amazing PC to run it. Which is a major reason for it's success, in my opinion (there are lots of people out there with low-end PC's who play Half-Life).

Games like metroid, flashback, bubble bobble etc seemed to have some kind of magic games dont have today. My all time favourite game was on the master system, cosmic spacehead. I think its because game companies have grown so much lately all the whole game industry is crontroled nowadays by money, when before (like ten - fiften years ago) game developers where computer nerds trying to have some fun with their amiga and most of the time just doing shareware games and had to have another source of income.

so don't think mods were HL's only moneymaker.
