2. If your computer can barely handle HL, then you might want to consider upgrading (if you don't have the money, do it in small chunks.. a little memory here, a little upgrades there)
3. Normal servers use WONID, so therefore they won't show up in Steam.
4. Why would you need to use a third party server browser? Steam has it's own system that is basically the same. (at least it's kinda like gamespy's)
Personally, I copied my entire SIERRA directory first, so I could still play the WONID stuff until Steam was mandatory.
:::note: I hope I didn't come off as being a d**k, because I really wasn't trying to.

1) Did that still screwed up hl directory I dont know why it did it it just moved a bunch of stuff and it screwed it up.
2) P4 2.0 gighz, 256 RAM, GeForce 4600 128 meg card, Cable modem. Im pretty sure that will handle hl if not then we are all screwed
3) Most servers use wonids and i pity the day that steam is mandatory. They had better have all those bugs and annoyances such as screwing up your hl directory ironed out.
4) As of right now ASE is worlds and worlds better than what I saw out of steam. It takes days to connect to a server if any show up at all and if you dont have a mod then wait you can download this 700 meg file right now that will take 5 hrs so have at it.
no thanks you can keep steam. I would rather shoot myself in the foot than go through that hassel again.
That was actually what I meant by "if your comp can't handle it..."
You might want to upgrade your memory if all else fails. I have 1024mb and i connect to servers within 5-10 seconds.
Unless you got a really messed up version of Steam, there shouldn't have been ANYTHING put INTO your Half-Life directory.
One MAJOR factor when installing steam is making sure you check the "Don't mess with my files (uses more disk space)" option. (that isn't the exact wordage, but you get the picture). If you have the other one checked (the one that is "recommended") then it will mess up stuff.
When you do the correct option, it copies everything into the Steam folder (therefore leaving you with 2 versions of half life.. one with WONID, one with Steam).
**EDIT***
Oh and one thing a lot of people are overlooking is the fact that Steam will NOT be mandatory until all bugs have been worked out. Until that day, WONID will still be in effect.
The 500k install doesn't work for most people so stay clear of it and get the install that includes the cache, this will allow you to play the supported mods. For currently unsupported mods (NS) you're best of waiting as it's all a bit screwed and nothing seems to work right. Rest assured that the WON servers will not be disabled until these problem are sorted out.
So basically sit tight and keep an eye on the steam pages until then only install steam if you want to check out the features or play CS1.6. Basically I was very worried about Steam screwing the HL Mod community but it appears valve know about the problem and are going to sort it out. I'm going to sit back and chill for a while and let them get on with their jobs.

Steams game browser is the worst ive ever seen, lets narrow the filters down a bit, oh i cant get closer to home than europe, now come on, surely they can do better than continents, ASE has just about every country in the world. (and gamespy was crowned "most over hyped program" not long ago )
Also, when i installed steam I installed if with the intention of never looking at its ugly arse again, just leaving it running in the background.
The real reason steam has annoyed me is, it seems valve want the entire world to get so lazy they cba to even go to the shops to by games, tell me it doesnt look like that to you
One thing they should have done is waited until it was bug-free before they released it... but it seems they were a little over anxious.
With the filters, why not just arrange by ping? I do that and then find the one with the highest number of players + the lowest ping. It basically MAKES it so it is close to my house, so I personally find no need for the country filters.
What other kind of filters besides different countries would you like to see in it? (i'm just curious as to what you all want with Steam [besides having it work])
**EDIT**
YOu know what's sad? I'm one of those people that is too lazy to go to the store (I put off getting WC3 until very recently.. merely because I hate going to the mall [big waste of money, btw])
*EDIT*
Yea, it is sad, i feel almost sorry for you (joking, dont feel sorry for you, i mind my own business and i am completely not interested in what you do )
*/EDIT*
Oh, yea, mall, heh, lol, im not going into some stupid mall, im going in JRC, there they have mainly computer games + acessories and computer magazines. Not to mention i actually see the sun when goin there.
For me its different, i like having the game on CD with printed manual, when i cant have that, it makes no difference for me from simply starting eMule and download anything (only difference is buying cheap games from independent developers (Pontifex).
