no... you WILL offend almost every single scottish person and welsh and irish... the south irish used to blow people up about being part of the UK for christsake. I don't think you realise how serious an issue it is; it's about identity, culture and pride. People have actually died over this.
I've never used the word 'america' to mean a contenent, only the country because most people of the USA and even the canadians don't even make that distinction themselves. heck, it's called the united states of america... what does that make canada and mexico? un-united states? The term 'america' has long since sunk away from meaning the contenent in people's eyes and mainly gets used a short-hand to refer to the United States of America.
United Kingdom, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England are such distinctly different and unrelated names there's almost no room for confusion beyond blind ignorance. The same goes for asia, japan, china, india, etc. If I'm going to talk about the contenent then I'll call it North America or South America, any other reference and you can use your intelligence to work out that I mean 'united states of America' without the need to be offended; after all I'm merely missing off the flowery parts at the start to abbreviate; This is why a lot of canadians do get offended if you call them americans or say 'hey are you from america?'. You're arguing about a language hiccup that the vast majority of people have long since either forgotten or stopped caring about. But England instead of UK or even Britain is a sorely clear mistake that can't be attributed to abbreviation like that, no way and no how =P

thankies ^^ lol, it took me a little bit to realise what it was you were arguing about at first =3
we might not be as big as the US, but I'd hate to try walking from the top of the UK to the bottom (especially going through glasgow where you'll probably lose your wallet and shoes)
Europeans in general seem to take offense at Americans loving the life they have in the US. If we show patriotic ideals then we are automatically nationalists. I love living in America, but I also loved living in Bosnia and Croatia. I'm sure I would like living in France.

I think we take more offence to the way your government acts outside the US, than the way you act inside the US.
