Google was first thing i tried but its hardto specify what i want, there are tens of thousands pages containing "packet writing software" or such.

packet writing is formatting the CD-R*/RW or DVD+-R*/RW by special program so you can then copy, move or delete contents of the CD like if it is normal HDD (or big floppy or such).

    *edit*
Its good if you are making frequent backups of some smaller files, often deleting them or replacing them with new versions. Formatting the CD/DVD so it can be packet written eats up a bit of its space** (like formating HDD or floppy), but if you will be making such backups using standard multisession writing method each update will eat additional space for makinglead ins and outs, so at the end you may have full CD with just 100MB of YOUR data, then you will have to format the CD and start again.

    * - Deleting files on CD/DVD R however doesnt gives back the used space so using packet writing on -R is not much useful.

** - The program i had before was capable of doing volume format so the available space on the CD was still +- the same as before formatting.

Hmm, i very much doubt this would be able to be done on recordables, and if it's just programs to make use of rewritable cds, then ahead's Nero (although, that uses InCD) is good, as is adaptec's Easy CD Creator.
