R&D Miracle, Or Harbinger Of Doom
The "Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency"(I believe thats correct) (DARPA henceforth) Has created many things in the past generation or so that have changed society itself. One such advent was ARPANET. The baby version of The Internet. (That's what your using now ) Anyway, Looking through the many Black-Mesa like projects the conduct makes me wonder. Are they the best R&D construct yet? Or will their creations cause more harm than good.

For your own research, check out D.A.R.P.A's site here Browse through curret prototypes, and such. Draw your own conclusion then post why here.

Just like everything in the world, there are good things and bad things.

However, in DARPA's case, I'd say it's done more good than harm, even though DARPA is probably responsible for the invention of the hydrogen bomb.

Just look at it this way:

Out of DARPA's inventions that were bad, were any of them used? If so, how many and how much?

Out of DARPA's inventions that were good, were any of them used? If so, how many and how much?

Doing your research will yeild more info for the good side, thus brining my to my conclusion.

I'm staying neutral this time, so I agree that its done some bad and some good, and a LOT we don't know about probably.

Well, DARPA is more research-oriented. Another service works on application.

Most of their research isn't oriented towards weapons, and a good bit of it isn't oriented towards the defense industry.

These days about 3/5 of what they work on directly is either computer networks or sensors. A lot of the cutting edge research outside these areas is granted to universities and DARPA just oversees them. I've worked on two such projects.

To the true conspiracy theorist, the scary work is being done by an organization no one knows about. Used to be the NRO but since they were outed and folks know what they do now it has gone back to "them".

This is a nonissue. The DARPA cheif died in Metal Gear Solid.

Organizations doing pure research are few and far between these days. Anything we can do to encourage them is alright by me.

Check out what some of the only big researchers are doing these days, it will likely spawn quite a few more interesting discussions. Anything to stop the endless procession of boring and unarguable religious 'debates'.
