How long?
How long of a learning curve is anticipated for commanders? It seems like NS will have a sharp curve. Can any PTs offer some insights in this area? I'd be a shame if NS newbies put the game away after a day becuase no one on a pub knew what the heck they were doing...
Any day now! Can't wait!

Guh? Learning curves are measured in how steep they are.. not how long they are..
Or if you had a predetermined.. aw nevermind.
There are also multiple skill levels for different times (I forgot to label the lower axis, shhh ) It all depends on how clever you are. The gaps are those breaks you take to get cookies and the like. I thought about all of it.
Anyway.. I would guess the learning curve would depend highly on the person, alot of people just have no sence of stratigy at all and other plan everymove they make which relates to some huge stratigy they have planned out. Not to mention on how new the person is to RTS's though NS is much difforent then say C&C or SC (hehe I remember when the commanders hud was ripped off from SC) Depending on the person I'd expect (from what I've heard) that you'd be able to familyerize yourself with the Commander mode after a couple of games assuming your stratigy skills our average. Not to say you'd mster it but you should be able to adiquitly support your team etc.. My advice if your looking to become a good commander is make sure you can multitask very well
So really RTS vets will have no problem then?
Good...
Anyhow, I started my commanding recently, and as long as you know what the buildings do, it is very simple indeed. Maybe not simple to make your team win, but its very easy to help. I won my first game in fact, and got a cheer of applause. Oh the memories.

Where h is the specific IQ of the person, and r is the number of people in a server.

i really get mad when someone doesn't follow my orders and i have to say:
"TOLD YOU SO!"

I'm gonna play NS as a cause they would be really challenging.. ya know not being able to move and all *nods*
1: Know what road to victory your gonna take within the first five minutes
2: Know the location of your enemies first hive in that time.
3: Keep your marines as well equipped as you can afford. Some commanders forget that if you keep your individuals satisfied, they will be loyal to you and more capable as well as drivin to kick alien ###. (just dotn let em go commando)
4: Do not sit still for long. Camping is a recipe for failure. Build and research as move.
5: Spend less time trying to force your men to do EXACTLY as you say and more time giving THEM the info and keeping them together. The marines will see soem situations more clearly than you do (IE: A flyer is spiking a marien from the end of a long hallway, and the commander cant see him but the marine can)
6: The inverse of 5, in some situations, YOU know whats best. (IE: There is a bob on the ceiling, and you can see it but they cant, you tell them to ignore the node and walk through the room quietly)
7: Know when to follow 5 and when to follow 6.
These are things you will all come to know. Once the console becoems intuitive (and it ain't too hard), commanding is fun and the feelign is transcendent to that of any RTS. EVER. (yes even Warcraft 3, when was the last tiem you ordered a group of men to attack and they responded "#### no!") ANd no AI can ever simulate Human Engenuity.
Nice comments, Humbaba. (:
