alt+tab messes up half-life. don't do it period. if you need to get to another app, you should close hl and do it that way.

I'm not too sure about the menus. mine messes up when i go to them in-game also, so i just stopped doing it.

i'm guessing that too much is going on when you have the menus and game going on.

what are your comp specs?

Steam doesn't have this alt-tabbing problem, so once HL is migrated over to that there won't be a problem any more.

Alt tab messes up my sound, not my FPS. When I go into the game menu (While in game), though, it doesnt mess up anything. Maybe it has to do with the amount of ram or the configuration or your half life, or just your computer itself.

Hope this gets fixed in future versions of half life...mainly half life 2. (Cant wait!!! )

Actually, your wrong.
It still has this problem.

Before, I had sound problems, now they progressed to FPS problems

This is a P4 2ghz comp, 256mb ram, 60gig hd, XP Home SP1, DirectX9, Intel inetgrated audio/video, dsl connection

Games really aren't designed with the intent of letting you alt-tab out of them. For that matter, installers aren't even designed to work correctly with a virusscanner running in the background. Bad things can happen when you do either.

Other than changing servers using ASE or whatever, why would you want to alt-tab out anyway? Even then, it's not really in-game, but rather in-menu.

Well one thing that will definitely help is some more memory (more memory makes the world go 'round).

hmm.. is your dsl fast, or is it just a 56k modem in disguise?

Alt+Tabbing will mess up quite a few programs that use full screen mode (ie: most games). The problem is that your video card/memory/internet get's overloaded with the changing of the programs, and therefore gets stuck in a cycle of 99% cpu usage in "SysyemIdleProcess".

As I said before, your best bet is to just close HL before moving on to different programs. I do it all the time when I forget to turn on Cheating-Death. It may be a hassle, but your computer will love you for it. (and if you think about it, the time it takes to restart just about evens out with the fps messups and whatnot)

Hope that helped! If you want, talk to me via aim or your server and I can walk you through some stuff. (aim: ohedwigoo)

ACTUALY

I have seen things like this before..

the going to menu borks HL, we sorta ssociated it with some old ATI cards.

yah, we had HL and NS installed on all of the compSci lab computers. If any one hit esc they would have to kill HL (fastest way)
every single computer was the same and we sorta decided it came down to the old ATI cards, osrry mate I think the solution is don't do it.

Is pretty good dsl, 40kb down, 20kb up..
This problem seemed to surface awhile ago.. I didn't have it when I first installed NS
Only annoying part is when people IM me and ignore the away message, then trillian pops it up and kills hl..

sugestions:

1) get rid of trillian (it is a bad piece of software, there are other free things out there that do the same thing)
2) turn off all IM services when you are gaming, it will improve your FPS

Trillian stays. Unloaded all dll's except ICQ/AIM have not had any problems. Besides, I'm not going back to AIM client.
I would but I wouldn't really think they would do that much damage to FPS

look, HL is messed up if ANYTHING steal focus from it, solution?

kill all other programs before running HL

oh, and when Trillian decides to freeze your comp when ever it starts up (great when you have it set to start when windows does), don't complian, you have been warned

or when it delets all your contacts, or anything else

simple solution:

Download ICQ light, it interfaces with AIM ;P so yah, kill trillian and just use ICQ

I have not had any problems with trillian, I dunno what you are talking about..
Sure it displays a splash screen when it starts, but I could break out my resource hacker and kill it if I wanted..
And besides, I have mIRC and 10-15 channels open when I start HL anyway..
Hmm, the only problem I had with trillian is it would not find its "skin" if I moved the directory, but it took all of 2 mouse clicks to fix

me screams!!!

the idea is that HL is a recourse hog, if you want it to run better simply kill Mirc, kill all IM services everything! you don't need them open, just kill em all it will improve your game play
• sickboysickboy Join Date: 2003-09-13 Member: 20804Members, Constellation
I'd personally stop all other processes when running hl. If you have to have trillian running while playing, just turn off the popup.

With mirc, well... just close it I guess. It really doesn't eat very much of your computer, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

NOTE: The *only* reason I'd close the progs is because of the popups. I've had them running and never had anything mess up my fps.
