<div class="IPBDescription">oh God, what have I done?</div>Well today was my first day at my new job. PHP Programming (supposedly, although I found myself writing down serial numbers to computers and cleaning out #(*&ing cabinets today...) plus some tech support (as its a small company). I basically spent from 8AM till about 3PM doing nothing, then at 3 they wanted me to actually use PHP to generate some report of their database which I hadn't even seen yet, all while knowing that I don't fully know PHP yet...
If this is what programming is like, please let me work at McDonald's. This sucks. Now I don't know what I"m going to do... I threw away my old job, the job where I could be proud of what I did, the job where I was good friends with my coworkers, the job where I didn't have to get up at 6:30 in the (*#%*(&ing morning... And I threw it all away and now I'm stuck in this hell. :X

um... I'm sure it'll work out in the end.... I hope...
<span style='font-size:7pt;line-height:100%'>eep...</span>
But seriously, sorry it went so horribly. I'm sure you'll find a way. Ask in IRC <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Like my first week at a coal lab. They had me clean out every cuboard in the place. Coal is an absoute b**ch to clean up. Then I graduated to cleaning out bottles in a big tub of hydrochloric acid. Eventually they moved me onto actual analysis which was pretty cool.
Buck up!

Dont feel too bad, just look for areas where you can shine, and dont limit yourself to your title. If you see a way to do something better let them know, thats a good way to move up and get the golden handcuffs
TECHNICALLY....education unlocks all the money in the world to you...now figure out a way to get me a cut of the spread <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I hate you all......
paper round
woot
Oh the horror! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Now that could be a problem. Are you sure they know that you don't fully know PHP yet? Or ar ethey just being donkeys because you are the new guy?

nahhh
I would say that winning the LOTO does that.
Also its a very small place. Small as in like, there's 8 people total, and only 4 were there yesterday...
meh.
I'm going to stick in and see if Friday and Monday are better, but I have a feeling that Tuesday I'll be going to beg for my old job back, and if that doesn't work I might just jump off the roof...
Being honest with them might help retrieve it (i remember you said you were
on good terms with your boss... or was that someone else?)
My job rocks compared to everyone elses, I get paid to play games, make
coffee and do the odd errand into town. I like the errands because I get my
tasks done a.s.a.p and then go for a wander and relax <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Today for example, I played Conflict Desert Storm 2 on the PS2 from 10am til
2pm, entertained my boss's 3 year old daughter (gorgeous child and very funny)
and then got sent the Post Office.... there was NO queue so i was in and out within
3 minutes. So I went to Mc Donalds, ate my burger and read the paper.
When i got back I simply said "big queue" and sat back down at the PS2.
Ahhh..... sucks to be me <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Programming is hard. A programmers day is filled with problems and unknowns, and it's filled with learning. You will not know the solution before the work is done.
If you don't know PHP (did you say you knew it when they hired you? -- bad move if you did), learn by doing.
Ask for a print-out of the database structure. Look through it, try to see what data they want and how you can get it out. Read through the references at php.net concerning database structures. Ask google a few questions -- there are many out there who have been stuck with such problems before, and have shared their experiences and knowledge.
If you need more time, say so.
It's just a job. If you feel you cannot cope with it, get another one. But at least try first -- if only for the experience.
And last: I've seen too many people not able to cope with their work starting to grow bitter and burning bridges. Never do that -- it's still JUST A JOB. Be nice to people, and people will be nice to you. Never talk behind your co-workers back. Never talk bad about the customers, even if they can't hear you. Treat your boss like a co-worker, not someone way above you, but realise that (s)he makes the decitions.
Good luck with your job!
And I understand that perfectly. Some people love an easy job, some people thrive on the challenge. And an easy, basic job that has you cleaning cupboards instead of using what you have painstakingly aquired can drive some people insane.
How can you be certain if it is the job and not the field or vice versa?
I would want to find out if it is the job I hate or the field that I hate. Then I would act appropriately.
If you don't like the job AND the field, better get your old job back quick.
I remember my first day at Sonics (my first job period). There were two managers, and one hired me, and the other, thinking I already saw the training videos, started me fixing burgers right then and there. Not knowing what the heck I was doing, I did the best I could and somehow saw my learning curve in action and was as good as the others by the end of the day.
Moral of the story? Give it a little more time. You can learn a lot about yourself when you are placed in environments you don't wish to be in initially. You find out what sort of person you are.
I work as a Produce Assistant in Safeways (well for now anyway). Involves rotating stock, stocking shelfs, removing spoils, crush carboard, watching for shoplifters (produce is at the entrance) and numerious other tasks.
Beets my paper round and pays better even on the probabtionary period. Oh and I get to talk to people and dont get naged for pretending to do nothing.
All in all, not a bad job.
<b>OMG THREADNECROMANCY!</b>
I just happened to find this post while doing a Search for some other crap...
I sure am glad that I listened to those of you whom encouraged me to stick with it. The 2nd day on the job was as bad as the first, but after that it was smooth sailing.
Its now over a year later from the original post, and I must say things have turned out completely different than what I thought would happen when I initially made this post. I have since become very knowledgable at the things I do, and I still enjoy it very much. More importantly my coworkers are all great and are fun to be around. I mean how many other people have a boss who has a "1337" poster in his office, and has a coworker who gives you an awesome Nintendo shirt for Christmas? :D Most of the things I was griping about seem downright silly now. heh.
I really love my job and I'm very lucky to be there.
So thanks to all of you whom over a year ago kept me from making what would probably be the dumbest move I ever would have made (quitting). <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/style_images/TSA_Skin-975/icon12.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' /> :D

On congrats on enjoying it. I lasted 13 months how long will you last <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Or (pfffffft), 'Russell'. L4mez0r...

I'm in my first year of BSc Web Development @ Uni Of Teesside UK. It's a fantastic course so far. I recommend it!
Year 3 i go off to industry too, so i'm really hoping it will be good. I don't want to spend a year cleaning things and writing down serial numbers.
