I bought me a Logitech DualOptical. I love it. I honestly believe it helped my aim in games. It's so smooth, never jumpy at all. I never have any glitches or jumps. I agree with the above posters, my first problem was when learning to pick up my mouse and replace it. I got used to it after an hour of playing. It's lighter and just feels smoother to move around. I still use a nice cloth mousepad just for the resistance and feel of it, though. Plus, it has a laser to ward off attackers!

I have the most basic Microsoft Intellimouse (two buttons, scroll wheel which doubles as third button). I have used it for around... 5 years and its still working fine. I only had one problem with it, when I got a new repeated-pattern mouse mat. It would sometimes stick, send me looking up to the sky and spinning (ingame, not in RL). Removing the mousemat and using my desk instead cured it. I would recommend optical to anyone.

[Edit]
I just realised I forgot to mention the excellent red laser light, makes it easy to find your PC in the dark!

I have a stupid tracker ball mouse! I think its stupid, everyone thinks it stupid! Everyone hates it! I only use it out of spite.*

*Actually I love it (except the lack of a wheel/third button) and I'm only saying that because Agent's threatening to 1) hit me and 2) blind me with his laser mouse.

I feel I should point out the fact that althought I am a great advocate of optical mice, I can't stand tracker ball mice (the type where you use your fingers on the ball itself). Also, I'm sat next to Edcrab (and I've used his awful mouse), so I can physically threaten him in person.

Word of advice for optical mice users:
Get a GOOD mousemat with a nice non-repeating pattern on it. Be prepared to spend near or over $10 on said mousemat.

Makes a world of difference.

to be honest I find paper (free) and cardboard (also free) work great with optical mice lol

someone once told me brown paper bags are like the ultimate optical mouse mats o.O

I'd honestly never heard that one... double use then! When your not using the mouse you optical users can cover your ugly faces!

*stabbed in neck by Agent*

*hand clasps trackball mouse with last effort*

I... will not... submit... *dies*

The pad I'm using is a Allsop cloth pad with a waterdrop picture on it. Works great. It also came with a matching cupholder. :O

I have an IKEA wood-effect desk, works great as a mousemat, but I'll have to try a paper bag. I can suffocate Edcrab with it too.
On a similar topic, those who have Windows 2k or XP, what mouse sensitivity settings do you use? (Logitec Users also get a special sensitivity tab in windows 98 which isn't normally accessible). And how many people use USB compared to PS/2?
My optical is USB, but I have a PS/2 converter for it (I dislike using USB ports for "vital" functions).

Optical mice are great, but DO NOT GET AN INTELLIMOUSE. I've had to replace mine twice under warranty because the contacts decayed and it would double click whenever I single clicked. Everyone I know with an intellimouse has had this problem. It's really nice other than that though.

~scratches head~

I've still got the same intellimouse explorer thingy I got like 3-5 years ago (whenever they first came out) and it's still working 100%
It's the original 5 button silvery one and the only problem it ever gave me was when I spilled some juice on it and the buttons got stuck down =3

Another BIG tip is to go for PS2 mice over USB ones. PS2 sends less total data, but much more often, while USB sends tonnes and tonnes of data less often.

So with totally random numbers to help the example along, you'll find that if a USB port could send up to 100 megawhatzits every 2 seconds, you'd find that a PS2 mouse would send 10 megawhatzits every 1 second.

A mouse doesn't need to transfer anywhere as much data as a USB harddrive, modem or scanner, so you don't need so much bandwidth. What you need is pure response time.

What you can often find with USB mice on single colour surfaces is that if you move the mouse too fast in any direction it will instantly make you point straight up. Very frustrating for skulks and it will often get you killed. PS2 mice cope with shiny or plain coloured surfaces MUCH better.

PS - If you have a USB mouse it's really cheap just to buy a USB-PS2 converter and whack it on the end of your cord. You can then just experiment with it on and off and see what gives you the best results. Yes, the converters work just as well as having a proper PS2 plug on the end of your mouse, so don't worry about it not working properly or anything. The same "buggy" or "slow" USB optical mouse can perform wonders when plugged into a PS2 port)

I've had an entire 2 optical mouses.. Both Microsoft, both of the same build.. one is quite a bit newer (and lighter), but the basic shape is the same..
The older one died a while ago. That wasn't a fun experiment... It would "Toggle" Going from really sensitive down to completely dead.. Then really sensitive. Trust me, if you think trying to adjust to a different sensitivity setting is hard, just think of it when the setting is constantly changing
The new on works great though.. Yet to see it try the toggling act.. But if/when it does, I'm gonna go out and get one of those 5 button mouses. Because buttons rock
as for the mousepad. I'm using a nice grey fabricish mouse pad I got with a computer back in 95... Lots of nice little doodles and skethces on it... Heehee.. I sucked at drawing in 95. Not much has changed since then.

I bought a microsoft intellimouse explorer back when it was new technology, several years ago, for, like $55 bucks... and it broke in just a couple months. I'm assuming the technology is more reliable now.

but mice and keyboards are soo last year anyway. get a datajack implant to interface with your cyberdeck. that's where it's at...

a fun thing to do is turn your optical mouse upside down, and piont a laser pionter into it. see if you can play a game or use an aplication only useing a lasre pionter.

I use a Logitech Wheel Mouse and it works great. Very smooth, no jumping no nothing. It's corded, USB or PS/2. Only annoying thing is the three buttons (MB1, MB2, Mwheel) and I want five buttons so i can switch to slot1 quickly instead of "invprev" but oh well.

Logitech is very stable now.
