People apparently couldn't just spell "turret", and newbies everywhere, and retards everywhere, started saying "turrent", and thus..it spread.

It's probably also the similarity to "torrent" (german: Strom, Sturzflut) which lead to such malapropisms (sp?) like "lork" and "clorf" ...

Basically "turrents", "commando", "lork", "shootguns" etc. are what experienced players use when they want to sound nubbish, usually to make fun of the nubs. Occasionally though, nubs use them too.

I think they say "Turrent" because of the word "current."
Maybe it's a possible explanation. *sp*
Or maybe some people are just idiots haha.

Turret often turns into turrent while typing quickly. Through repetitive action, your brain learns to do frequently used letter sequences very quickly and unconciously, and will occasionally fire off that sequence instead of what you want to type.
'-ent' is a very common end to words, much more so than '-et' and so when you're focusing more on typing quickly than typing accurately it sometimes slips through.

Other misspellings come into play because of proximity of letters. I'm pretty sure that 'pwned' appeared as a replacement for 'owned' because 'o'and 'p' are right next to eachother.

Others come into play because of the letter distribution across the keyboard and the associated time it takes for you fingers to hit certain letters. 'teh' is so common because the time it takes for your left middle finger to reach up and hit 'e' is slightly shorter than the time it takes your right index finger to reach left to hit 'h'. Try typing 'the' quickly, but accurately. You'll notice you have to have your left middle finger wait until the right index hits the 'h'. If you go for pure speed (as most people do while trying to type while gaming), 'the' turns into 'teh' because the left middle is able to get to its key faster.

Typhon put it very nicely. I don't think you learn the misspelling from anywhere, it happens spontaneously. I also thought it was turrent a long time ago. It took hearing the word spoken out loud for me to realise that there is no n (I'm not a native english speaker). I also thought that mortar is written mortal. You don't concentrate on individual letters when you read the text.

The "o" key is right next to the "i" key, where do you think "pwn" came from? People can't type, and the typos become acceptable, much to the detriment of the english language.

'r' is right above the 'f', whoever started this one, was probally typing so fast his hands were all over the keyboard, i doubt if that was his only typo, it was probally just the funniest one....... havent you ever been in a insane rush to type, or too damned tired to care, and came out with something along the lines of "reh omos st teh basse!1!!11"

'clorf' has a couple of possiblities:

The first explanation (and the most likely IMO) is that 'clorf' is an intentional misspelling made simply for its rediculousness and never actually happened genuinely, just like the '!' being replaced with '1', which is replaced with 'one' thing often seen on these forums. I know '!' -> '1' actually occurs for real if the person stops holding down shift long enough, but replacing '1' with 'one' or 'eleven' or something is done simply for the humor.

Second possibility is its a rare occurance of two errors in a single word. 'o' is right next to 'i', and 'r' is right next to 'f', so it might work. However, i doubt this explanation since 'f' is on the home row (asdfjkl;, where your fingers naturally rest) so there would be no reason for the person to have their finger up around 'r' and accidentally hit 'r' instead of 'f'.

The other option is that its simply the author spelling out how someone's voice comm sounded in game. We all know HL can really mess up people's voices.

Wasn't it also a Tribes joke? I do admit that I spelled it wrong before a few years ago simply because that's how I had always heard it pronounced. Turrent just sounds more natural to english than turret.

Turret is pronounced "turrent" so that it won't take too long to say the word. Basicly it is easier to say "turrent" than it is to say "turret".

I'll always call turrets "turrents" =) It's a revolution I tell ya!!!!! =)
