I htink it also helps to study what kind of moves the button masher is using. if the masher uses mostly vertical moves, you can sidestep them. if they use horizontal moves, try quick kicks then follow up with a vertical attack of your own.
I consider Ivy one of the best to keep people at a distance. Her sword/whip is awesome and can be really annoying when she gets a combo goin on you. Try this (if you can understand it)
A+B; A; A; B <-- A+B will get you into Spiral Serenade stance. wait for masher to get close, then follow with A A and B in quick succession. the B at the end will toss the opponent in the air. I usually use that time to go back into spiral serenade stance and repeat the process except substitute B with two more A's or a (down)A for an attack throw. Btw, A is basically horizontal attack, B is vertical attack.

Back in the good old Dreamcast days I used to LOVE playing Soul Calibur! But I used to HATE playing it with friends. The amount of hours I spent with Mitsurugi (is that spelt right?) learning his moves, perfecting his unblockable and just generally hammering the game with him was unreal. I had ALL his skills down to an art.... and then my mates would pick some dude with a big axe and stand there bashing random buttons..... and win! I almost threw my pad at one person for that.
Then Power Stone made its way to my collection..... good times! Anyone foolish enough to button bash was promtly destroyed by a well throw chair or barrel.
We need a remake of Power Stone (1 or 2) for the X-Box and GameCube... that would rock
ever see the terrifying constant zombie hoard with jill? I could keep 3 zombies on screen at all times and still do attacks XD If you want to see cheap like you'll never find in any other game though try Guilty Gear X and play Sol
ick... Killer Instinct had insanely long and silly combos and to make matters worse the combo breakers never seemed to work for me half the time. It was annoying because most fights were just about whoever got the first hit then the other player got to sit and watch his energy disappear as the 'winner' tried to rack up the biggest over-the-top combo they could manage =/ The characters weren't exactly memorable either... the only ones I remember were Jago (mr ninja), Glacius (mr super cheap and easy combo master) and the robot guy who could shoot you with his head o.O I think the soundtrack was ok but i don't really remember it anymore ^^; Did I mention most of the chars look like they were made of plastecene?
Compared next to SC though, Soul Calibur with 2 skilled fighters looks almost like ballet with it's flowing weapon trails, smooth animations and sometimes matches where the 2 characters thrust, cut and jump skillfully without managing a single hit for long periods of time

On the subject of Soul Calibur, In the DC version, I was awesome with Sophitia...Not a button masher either, except if it's like the first time I've played and no one wants to let me test out who I like. I think I still remember one of the longer combos...

They're pretty much dead if you manage to get it in quick. If they want to stay on the ground I think /\ (or either angle and up) press holding B was Gaia strike. I knew how to do this awesome, hit them twice, knock them into the air, spin around and hit them, and then slam them into the ground thing, but it was really hard, and took a while to start, so I just forgot that one.
Of course, it was always just easier to take Knightmare, press toward + X and poke people. When they get up, poke them again, if they try rolling away, smack them down with Y and then press it again to knock them in the air, and POKE AGAIN!
I'll have to eventually get SC2, since it has Sophitia (no, not for the breasts ). Guilty Gear XX soundtrack > all fighting game soundtracks
And... I found Killer Instinct amusing (and very well put together for it's day, especially graphically), but I can't take a game seriously that has combos over 50+ hits.

When i first start playing ANY fighting game my method of fighting transends in this order
Total button mashing (WTH does this combo of buttons do? oh... ) | Button mashing mixed with some discovered combos (these usualy are the easiest to pull off) | Enter training mode... keep trying different modifications of the combos i have found, usually i find a bigger combo hiding behind a small 1-2-3 hit | attempt the first time to controll my movements the whole fight... when frustraghted, button mashin time | Around here i usually look up combos online or in the guidebook (usually if ia m this far the character is my fav out of all of them) | Learn which combos flow the best together once again in practice mode | Fight fight fight... practice practice practice... it will all turn out in the end. I almost never make it to here, as i am usually distracted by NS or a shiny object.
You see... i am a button masher i guess (considering i dont fully train in a fighting game ever now a days) but i really dont intend to be that way, it is just how i learn the game.
Contrary to what Coil said, I wouldn't recommend GIing. It is surprising hard to pull off, and more often than not, you will only get counter hit. Also, GIing an opponent does not guarentee any damage. You have a .5 second window to attack, and in that time, they can re-GI your attack.
Against button mashers, learn all your character's quick moves, and pull these off with no mercy. Also, try sidesteping alot, since they will probably stuck attacking in strings, you can launch them from the side, which brings me to my next point. Use really cheap juggles that are usually made obsolete against good players since they can be Air Controlled, but the mashers will just get hit. For instace, I always launch my friend with 8wr8_2 B and follow up with 4A+B for a good amounth of damage. If all else fails, poke them from range.
We decided to take turns on Weapon Master mode and you get stuck with 1 char for a whole dungeon. Anyways, 1 of us is a Raphael player so we ended up stuck with him for the dungeon, not knowing raphael very well I just used his double forward B attack constantly which strangely seemed to win rather easily. After that the pad continued around (you pass it on whether you win or lose) and I just sat there being silly when they were losing going '~tut~ you're just not using the Y button enough (y = b attack)' anyways, after a rather nasty defeat the pad gets handed to me and and do double forward Y again for the whole match as a joke... but I win amazingly easy again!!! By this point the Raphael player is super miffed because I'm taking the mickey out of his char and everyone else is joining in. To cut a long story short we actually completed the whole of Weapon Master mode with the Y button only and we still go on about the 'magic Y' to this day; much to the original player's annoyance =3
Remember kids: if you want to win weaponmaster mode with Raphael... use Y!!!

I'm being dead serious
It was the best damned fighting game ever, and the soundtrack ruled to =)
If you're being continually beaten by mashers, its because you don't know how to play.
Please note - mashers are different from cheese characters (Cable in MvC2 can beat most opponents, and its NOT because of mashing. VIPER BEAM!!!!).

Likewise FPS teach you how to use basic cover, enter buildings, and learn the value of combined arms.
And in the final analysis, fighting games teach you as much about martial arts as playing CS will teach you about actually firing a gun.
Against button mashers, learn all your character's quick moves, and pull these off with no mercy.
