I dont need a 'friends' list(I dont get into all the ICQ/IRC/Net buddy stuff), I prefer the old style Quakeish takes-up-half-your-screen-console, I prefer ASE over the HL server browser, and I dont like the fog problem.
STEAM is not the greatest piece of software on earth, nor is it the worlds crappiest piece of software. To me it is unecessary software. Why fix something that's not broken? WON works just fine. I can live with STEAM and I can live w/o STEAM. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> smartest post I ever read about steam =P I'm with Xzil -- I don't have the space to spare, nor the patience to bother... it took me years to "master" the conventional HL way of doing things. Why they gotta up n' change it on me? I don't need to IM other gamers while playing HL. If I'm biting marines, chatting to people would be a distraction anyhow. I don't even TALK to other gamers outside of these forums =P
Steam was working great, until the update...Then it had that #SteamRoot....etc. button names and stuff, and wouldn't register servers. Now, I reinstalled it and the buttons are fixed, but the lag is still there, pings in NS are 700+. CS servers don't even come up.
Steam is good when it works right....which it was, but now it's f-ed up.

Because WON is *not* owned by VALVe, and those who _do_ own it pretty much ONLY have HL still authenticating through it. It's slow, buggy, and causes any number of aggravated users when even one auth server goes down.
Now, Steam. Owned by VALVe so it'll only be shut off when they decide, auto-upgrading so users don't have to hassle with patches, designed with a PAST game in mind, as well as future ones.
Oh... and you may be able to live without Steam. But soon, you will not be able to play NS without it.. er... or any other HL MP mod. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Is it safe for me to say I have no idea what steam is? Only thing I recall about it was a friend told me I needed it to join him in a game of cstrike and I told no problem, be there in a moment. And I promptly joined an NS server via gspy. Being I no longer have any love in the recesses of my heart whatsoever for cstrike, I left em flat. h4w.
