adventures in (direct) 3D
Okay, I just bought a brand spankin' new ATI Radeon 9600 128m. I installed it. Everything is working just fine until i go to run Natural Selection when the computer locks up. The same thing happened with Freelancer. So, I managed to get NS running fine on Open GL 1024x768 however, when I run it in Direct 3D the frame goes down horribly and the whole system eventually locks up. Sometimes it's your basic lockup (no blue screen) sometimes the monitors sets itself off and I have to restart. The same thing still happens in Freelancer (I'm assuming because it runs in D3D as well). I've upgraded my motherboard chipset drivers, I have the proper ATI drivers, and the all the D3D settings should be correct. Buddy at ATI said the only thing he could recommend would be updating my motherboard bios. Does anyone know an easy way to go about finding out the motherboards make, besides popping the old girl open and prying about? Or, better yet, know how to fix this crap?

Any help would be most appreciated.

I believe the traditional wisdom is that any "newer" card (say the last 3 years) should be run at OpenGL.

    ogl > d3d

    flat out

you should not try to run in D3D, you should only run in OGL for the reasons you stated

what im trying to say is that some games don't offer the OGL option. So what should I do then? Also, the thing is making my monitor shut off at random in Windows now. I think ATI just lost my business.

Hey mastadon what is your system specs. Maybe your board/cpu cannot handle the speed of a 9600.

lol, the fact that you get worse frame rates in d3d aint ati's fault, you will get the same thing with nVidia (lol, geforces give you a wall hack if you run in d3d ;P)

if you are having problems with specific games, don't come here, go there. There will have already runinto all of said problems and will have a fix for it more than likely (I have never played freelancer)

well after a quick google (sometihng you should al try for non NS specific Qs) the moniter shutting itself off with an ATI card seems to be a linux problem...

    try lowering your refresh rate?

and then going to both ATI's webby and to the manufacturers webby (if diff)

I have an AMD Duron 1ghz. I'm not sure what make my motherboard is but it's an SiS chipset. I've pretty much given up. I'm going to return the Radeon and see if a Geforce4 works any better. Otherwise I'll just start saving my pennies for a Fragbox

look, d3d is not as good as OGL neither nVideas or ATI's perform well simply b/c there is nothing to perform with.

like giving a great actor a junky script, they can't do anytihng about it.

again, go over to the freelancer webbie and see if any one has something that makes it work better ( i am sure there will be some one)
