    System specs?

    Off the bat, I'd lean toward that looking like a Wine or WineX problem. It can 'slip' on some pointer assignments, which looks to be what happened, taking handle names and instead of resolving them properly, using it as a literal.

    ditto for me - windows xp - I think it has a lot to do with that steam patch they recently released.

    Wine or wineX? Don't understand that.

    edit: does the same thing in default skin.

    Someone posted a fix for this earlier today, something to do with
    deleting a clientregistry.blob file or something.

    Back up the file before deleting. But yes, that is the correct fix.

    What had happened was that you updated Steam (and usually that'd be a good thing but...)
