Underperforming Cpu?

<div class="IPBDescription">autodetect lower than it should be</div> There was some talk about a similar problem in #ns a few nights ago, but I wasn't paying enough attention to it. My problem is thus:

My 2.4GHz processor comes up in autodetects for game setups and in my IRC CPU script as a 1.6GHz processor. Is it somehow underclocked? Is there something in the BIOS I need to tweak?

Relevant specs:
AMD XP 2400MHz 266FSB processor
Gigabyte GA-7AXP XP mobo
512Mb DDR333 ram

Don't know anything about BIOS setting at the moment to tell you though.

    with it been an athlon they do clock alot slower than rated, but thats cuz they have more power per mhz, but not that much slower.

    All i could sugest so far is bios, is the bios not got your processor humping at its corrrect frequency?

    My best guess is that your model name is the XP 2400+

    This does <i>not</i> mean that it is 2.4 ghz. It simply is the model number. My own Athlon Xp 2000+ clocks in at 1.6 ghz...yours should be nearly 2 ghz.

    That's about all that i can think of....are you sure that you have your numbers right?

    oky heres the confusing bit; the athlonXP series IS NOT INTENDED to run at the mhz of its title number. it performs as well as a pentium of that mhz speed, but is actually clocked much slower.

    you should have a chip that runs as well as a pentium 2.4Ghz, but in actuality is clocked lower.

    heres the catch, your chip is supposed to be 15x133 an it is running at 12x133, you can go into the bios and try to change the "Multiplier" to 15. it should start performing at its correct speed

    <!--QuoteBegin--http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=174028+--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=174028)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> XP2400+..Tbred-B.......15 x 133.........1995mhz.....1.65v <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    also, your ram is set to be able to run at 200, 266 or 333 mhz, and set it to 266 to match the processor for optimal stability. 333 would gie about 0.5% performance increase (really now, how is the computer gonna use memory running faster than the processor? put them in synch)

    showing off
    my older athlon 1.2 is actually intended to run at 1.2 ghz, 12x100, and i keep it at 8.5x166=1416 mhz <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Such as my 2GHz athlon xp.

    Hmm, here's what System Studio 2 tells me. The processor it detects isn't what I have written on my reciept, so is there a chance it's read the processor wrongly, or should I be complaining to the place I got the computer from?

    If you <b>paid</b> for an XP 2400+, then you, my friend, have been ripped a new one by the retailer.

    However, based on the model Athlon you have, everything else seems to be in order <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    yeh. As far as i know, correct me if im wrong but... The programs which are used to speeds dont use the speed that the processor is clocking at to work out what it is. I think they go straight to the processor to find out what it is.

    So yea, i think you may have been ripped off, to me that does look like an 1800XP

    EDIT: But lets wait for Zel's interjection, he is the processor master.

    Yea Im curious as well because I have a Athlon XP 2600+ and on the little overclocking program that came with it sez that it is a 1251 mhz. WTH?

    I would agree you have rights to complain, you blatently do NOT have an XP 2400, you have a 1800, like System Studio says.

    I myself have a 1800 and it runs at 1533mhz, which is the same as yours is currently running at.

    So basically, YES your processor should be running faster (or it's the wrong processor <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo--> ), but don't expect it to run at 2400mhz.

    *edit* Um, actually you COULD have a 2400, and some bios tweaking may be in order. I know that my 1800 insisted on running at 1050mhz untill I tweaked the bios. *edit*

    Those programs just read the speed your chip is running at, and display the equivelent processor name. If I had a 2500+ and overclocked it to a 3200+, it would show up as a 3200+. Your chip might be underclocked, or you might have gotten ripped off. The only way to find out for sure is to take the chip out and look at it.

    i dont know that the programs read the speed or read some label name, but my computer -> properties is showing me Athlon 1.42, and i clearly have a 1.2 overclocked to that.

    do you have a program that reads temperatures? MBM5 is a good one if you dont, and youll want one if youa re going to try clocking your multiplier and fsb on up to where it should be. however, it is now so far off, it really seems they gave you the wrong chip.

    this chip you have may be able to overclock at decent temps to the xp 2400+'s level, BUT you would be unneccesarily reducing its lifespan, so you want a genuine 2400 if you paid for one.

    the best way to tell is to look at the chip, AMD prints labels on the top of the core, but this requires knowledge of removing and reinstalling a heasink, and if you dont know how to do that you could cause serious damage to the chip and motherboard. do a little research, or have a friend do it, or take it to the store and show them all of this weird evidence, and also, read up on my earlier link;
    <a href='http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=174028' target='_blank'>http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=174028</a>

    youll see the only difference between the 1800 and 2400 are the stock voltage and multiplier. however, it is pretty much impossible for the multiplier to have been accidentally lowered, (people dont randomly do junk in bios these days do they?) is is possible to have your fsb unintenionally lowered, by putting off-speed ram into some mobo's but it looks like youre correctly at 133 fsb.
