Anti-virus

good ones?
I've been using PC-Cillin 2002, and Trend, as a greedy company as it is, decided to stop updating the virus definitions, forcing us to get 2003. Well, I got 2002 bundled, and I don't want to pay for 2003 (darn greedy people)

So I've been wondering, what Anti-virus do you think is good? If possible, free ones, or else if someone knows how to update PC-cillin 2002, that works too.

    Kaspersky is pretty good.
Norton too but it eats ram

    I've been using AVG.

    http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

Has caught several nasties in the past.

I used AVG for a while but its pretty stubborn, it doesn't have any option to stop it from running on start-up etc. I had to use RegEdit to stop it from running on startup. But it IS free, so that kinda makes it worth the hassle.

I find that Norton Antivirus, while not being free, is worth every penny. Sure, you gotta renew your subscription once a year (I just go and buy the newest version, works just as well), but I have NEVER had any problems with viruses when I had Norton on my compy.

AVG is the only one I would put any trust in, norton eats your system resources like theres no tommorrow and mcafee quarantines any file that does anything at all. AVG is reasonably discrete, if you leave your computer running all he time like myself then just schedule the daily virus check for 7:30am or some other time you're asleep/at work/school/where your computer isn't and it does it all and you come back to find your report waiting and best of all its freeeeeeee.

Norton is easily customisable (I sound like an ad). The reason why it eats up lots of resources is because of the constant monitoring by the scriptblocking. Just turn that off and you'll be fine. Of course you won't be quite as safe anymore either, and might as well invest in a cheaper antivirus then. No reason for paying for features you don't use.

Norton's 2kx is standard. I've had no problems with it and has caught many attempts from Kazaa and the net. My recommendation.

When was the last time u upgraded virus definitions. Your subscription unfortunately expires annually, so you may want to check it up on Norton's earlier than 2002.

Housecall, a free online virus scanner that in the past has always found things for me that Norton and Mcafee misses.

Trend Micro seems to be the best out there

they HAVE to stop giving you updates or else they would never make any money.

housecall is basicaly a free version of PC-cilin thats online

And since its only online, its not eating up your system resources by scanning your irc log files every time someone types something, or etc. :P
