- Sound and graphics card makers and memory--radeon 9800pro
- Operating system--windows xp
- Graphics mode and resolution you're running in (OpenGL or D3D)--no clue
- Detailed description of the problem, and what exactly you were doing before the problem occured.--when i go into a game then hit esc the screen turns black and i cant do anything.
- Whether or not you're running EAX. (Don't run EAX, usually.)--not
- What Valve retail client you are using (Halflife, Counterstrike, Day of Defeat)--halflife

go to options and video options
find where it says video mode and MAKESURE you are in OGL, seeing how as D3D bites
can you play normaly (assuming you don't hit escape)?
if you hit esc a few more times can you get back to NS?
ok, so now we know that your gfx card is boorking
just update the drivers, probably will do it
if not then this might be the catalyst problems, go looking around ATIs forums/FAQs for stuff on this
