Being kind of a cross between the default pistol, and njroo's picture in <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=49553' target='_blank'>this thread</a>.
Opinions on it so far (only an hour's work)? I'm thinking it may be a little too narrow, but that might just be because I'm used to the big beefy deagle I use. It currently stands at under 400 polys, so there's lots of detail yet to be added.
edit: i.e. I'm posting this to ask sheena what I'm doing wrong ^^

I'd run the the blade from the tip of the barrel down to the actual grip, big and flat. That way it protects the bulk of the hand and is more conducive to a chopping action (because tbh I don't see much force going behind a pistol grip bayonet poke).
Good point. I suppose a knife would be better for stabbing than slashing. How about if I have it covered but extendable, so it can be both pokey and a bit gunblade-y?
Anyhow, here's what I mean:
just make the pistol a bit more beefy, and im gonna cream my pants

In fact, if you look at flintlock pistols with bayonets (afaik the ONLY pistol to be equipped with a bayonet) you'll see that they are POINT weapons and combined with the shape of the grip they are more like mini fencing foils.

See? Observe the handle and needle point bayonet.

This is more saber oriented. Note where the pistol mechanism is. In this case its more like a sword with a gun on top. The saber shown can still be used for thrusting though, so the grip is straight to allow some bladework.
My big chunky concept isnt designed for sport fencing, its designed for chopping things up with something a bit more powerful than a pistol whip. Cleavery. Shape of the blade works with the movement of the hand - allowing cleaving or pistol shooting without complicated motion.
IMHO against Kharaa you'd probably want a cutting tool, since if they're truly bacteria based, chances are they lack anything approximating a major organ. A cutting tool allows you to hack bits off as opposed to a stabbing weapon which needs to hit some sort of major component.
Attached is a pic showing (badly) what you'd have to do if you intend to realistically use your handgun with a pointed blade.
Hm, thought it looked familiar. Though I thought I'd seen it in a game <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
Anyhow, my points on the technicalities of using it still stand. The Blade-y style one is a chopper with a good gun, the flintlock a point weapon with a good gun, and the saber is a point/edge weapon which unfortunately sacrifices on the gun aspect.
I feel like such a threadjacker <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> I didn't mean it!
Why not go the distance and make it entirely a gunblade. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Borrow nthngnsd's LMG/Knife script then convert it to Pistol/Knife. Then this will be really fun <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> (if you dont know what nthngnsd's LMG/Knife script is, its a script where when you right click it will automatically switch to knife and attack until you let go of mouse2. Then it will switch to LMG again.)
A) Easy to swing.
B) Accurate enough to shoot with.
C) Be able to cut with it.
Bit too unrealistic, imho.
plz put the huge knifey on!
..of at least make 2 versions..
/me gets down on my knees and begs
Yay! At least Maus hasn't gone raving mad yet <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->!
*shrugs*
I'm thinking Squall's Gunblade from FF8
oh god no.. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
similar, no?
not accusing you of anything, the designs just been done before
IMHO its like the Resource Tower - it fits in with the NS universe but it's not quite the defaults.
Personally I think it looks fine. Though I have to say giving it a sharpy and making it do double duty as the knife was a bit more of a break from the norm, and made it (IMHO) certainly more popular with players looking for "cool" or "quirky" models.
/me pulls out trout
diediedie!
/me attacks you with trout

YES!
(oh and ulatoh - if you look at <b>the first post</b> you'll see me acknowledge it's inspired in part by the default pistol)
