Super Cheap Tactic

<div class="IPBDescription">electrified turret factory death</div> I was playing a game last night when one of our alien RTs came under attack. Thinking nothing of it because I'd already chomped several marines and their RTs already I ran in to stop them and almost stopped in my skulky tracks.
Sure enough there was a marine attacking the Res Tower but there was also a row of 3 turrets and an electrified Turret Factory <b>sitting ontop of the RT!!!!</b>.
Getting over it and getting to the task at hand I jumped over the turrets and bit the marine in the face, killing him but also killing me as the electrified TF zapped me.

The good thing is that for some reason being ontop of the RT stopped the TF from operating the turrets so I just came back and gorged, bilebombing the turrets and factory to heck before rebuilding the now lost RT.
It was pretty scummy though because if we'd only had 1 hive the hovering death factory would've not only electrified our RT to death (which it did anyway) but once the RT was gone there was no way you could've taken the floating killer out without some major hastle.

Anyone else seen this tactic before or anything quite as nasty? o.O

    75 res to get that elec tf + 3 turrets, pretty expensive for a cheap strat :\.

    well the turrets didn't work anyway but I meant cheap as in... um... well, you know... not the res sense <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I thought you were referring to cheap as in being able to take it down as the turrets were disabled <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    but if the tfac was on top of the res node, and it killed the res node, wouldnt it fall down, preventing the marines from capping it?

    nope, it just floats there like some sort of ominious electro-blimp <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Ive dropped a TF on an alien res node, albeit by accident, and once my marines killed the node, the TF stayed.. but i couldnt build my own node under it <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    oh well... at least it backfires, but still using electrified TFs to take out res nodes is kind of annoying though a nastily viable tactic. It was the hovaring part that really struck me as cheap though ^~

    You can 'unhover' it by simply damaging it if Im not mistaken,I fooled around with a big DC tower and when I struck a hover DC,it flew away like an admin slapped it or something....

    That's the biggest flaw,it actually loses it's place once it's been damaged.

    Besides,one bolt doesn't kill a skulk right?

    it does after it's been hit by a few rounds <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    And nope, it didn't budge at all while I whacked it with bilebombs... it just hovared there while I splatted it into oblivion. It happened at the res node at horseshoe in... uh... whatever that maps called ^^;

    I dont see how its useful...

    Eh, for the tradeoff in how much res it costs, I don't think its worth it.

    One server I played on the commander gave out JPS, then dropped a TF on top of the refinery hive and Eleced it and then left. Sadly, no one was able to get up there and when we did, they came back.

    It was like a ticking clock!

    This is more of a "i owned j0000!!!" type of tactic. Like giving 10 of your men 10 GLs each or welder rush. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    well, we actually won the game in question anyway but I dunno... it just feels like the fumbling beginnings of a much nastier, better thought out tactic =P

    I don't think so... as someone else mentioned, that was a huge cost in RES just to get a 15 res RT down...

    So by killing it and rebuilding you end up losing 15(original RT cost)+10(regorging)+15(new RT) - (how much res that RT provided your team)
    You come out ahead in all ways for that.. I can't think of a viable reason to this, unless by doing this, it allowed a seige to reach a hive or something...

    But I've never seen that before (and I thought I had saw everything)

    My fav is dropping a CC on a Hive when FF is on, any OT's attack the hive... and the CC's are so hard to kill, the hive takes some damage and annoys the entire alien team for extended periods of time until someone wastes 2 minutes to sit there and chomp it to death.

    What if you recycle it afterwards? Does recycle give you back a portion of the electric cost, or just a portion of the initial build cost?
  • TrevelyanTrevelyan Join Date: 2003-03-23 Member: 14834Members
    i think it gives a portion of the upgrade cost... not the original drop cost.

    but thats a good question <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Seen this done where a marine commander put a PG right on top of the marine capped res node in maint. Highly annoying.
