Hey everyone,
I was hoping to get some help from the community on customizing the NS Steam color scheme. To do so, place <a href='http://www.natural-selection.org/downloads/TrackerScheme.res' target='_blank'>this file</a> in your ns\resource directory (Steam only), then edit it until the fonts, menus, controls and text look good for NS. I can't give out the background that will be used for NS yet, but I'll give you one little piece of it so you can get an idea for the color scheme.
Please post screenshots showing the edits you've made, then I'll take the best one and use it as the base for NS (I may perform further edits on it). Thanks!

Yes, it does. As you can probably tell, its a screenshot. Also, it looks like there are effects in the screenshot that aren't possible in HL, showing a heavy use of Photoshop. So ya, it shows that its gonna look kickass.
go look at Veil, if you study the emergeny nozle c-12 area, you'll see what the steam interface *MIGHT* be...
yes, that's maroon, and muave, and green, and brown, and gold/yellow.....
(Please note I could very likely be wrong here, I'll report back in a sec)
PS- Reading is your friend. Exactly as Flayra said, that picture is a sneak preview of the official background for steamed-ns, so that you can get a hint on what colours to make your scheme.
Unless Flayra means we're meant to be designing a scheme for Steam, and this should go in Steam/skins/ns?
yes, this is for steam only... (aka, ns 2.1 +)
DIRECTIONS:
<b>file goes into folder:</b>
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\__e-mail__\half-life\ns\resource
on mine, i had to create the resource folder... if you don't have one <b>CREATE ONE</b>
to test your changes, start up ns in steam, then go to "find servers"
Just tested now, and setting all the colours to "255 255 255 255" in my trackerscheme.res ind ns\resource didn't change anything. I'm gonna rename it to clientscheme now and see if it works.
I assure you that it will work fine on NS 2.0, and if only beta testers were able to make these tests then there'd be no point in asking everybody to try the color changing stuff.

it's FOR 2.1+.. will work on whatever version you want to have it on.... just has to be steam....
**edit**
as you can tell, i'm working very hard to figure out where this goes, how it works, and what i'm doing wrong... so i might make mistakes, we are learning along together....
TrackerScheme.res and ClientScheme.res don't apear to work
Maybe it would be easier to wait for flayra to tell us what it is exactly he wants <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
<span style='font-size:13pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:red'>e/ See the bottom posts of page 3 for my release</span></span>
I posted part of the Steam desktop background to give you an idea of what colors your scheme should work well with, not for any other reason.
The bad news is that unless you are using the default skin, then both clientscheme.res and trackerscheme.res are in your mod\resource directory are ignored. That's right, custom skins take priority over mod specific skins...
The bad news also is that even with the default skin applied, and every single color set to "255 255 255 255" (producing nothing but big white boxes where my menus should be ingame), the color of all the text was unaffected. Basically those scheme.res files can't change the colour of the text at all...
We know that the old textscheme files still allow mod specific control over fonts and colours even with custom skins applied, however that leaves you with two unhelpful options... Either you put in your own low res bitmap fonts that look all... Bitmappy.... Or you decide to put up the error messages generated when the bitmap fonts aren't present...
NS will complain but it won't be too hurt <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Now, as I said earlier, the NS skin will only work if you use it as a total custom steam skin and not just a ClientScheme (I doubt many people are using only the default skin... most will be using "Grey" or another one).
perhaps the colours need to be a bit more yellow rather than green.
edit: moved to post further down <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Don't forget you can add pictures <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
Am I right?
