Every where i see people complaining that "steam sux" and "steam doesnt work for me"
well heres a link to help you fix those problems

http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...18&t=47676&st=0

now stop your whinning and bitching and get steam working! Won wont be around forever and Steam is the new thing anyway.

Now, assuming you got steam working and running fine, what else is wrong with steam?

i see people just hating steam even though it works FINE with them.
Steam Advantages over WON:

-Its FREE, yeah ITS FREE, no monthly bills, all you need is your original Half life/Counter-strike Cd key to make your account and your ready to go.
-Built-in messaging system (no more alt tab aim or msn or yahoo or whatever)
-Built in "Join game" on friends, so you can easly join the games that your friends are in.
-Easy to Use interface. I mean come on, its just 1 click and your browsing servers already (click find games)
-No more ALT-TAB sound loss, yes now you may alt tab as you wish without sound problems or video problems (well, gamma is an exception)
-When downloading files, it tells you the estimated transfer time, instead of that stupid little bar that fills up ever so slowly.
-Its just plain better than WON, ten fold.

Now, for all of you people who heard "Steam sux" from Cs players, Well fact is, those cs players are really just angry at the "riot shield" and not at steam. So i recommend NOT taking their word for this.

For you people who still think Steam sux because Ns doesnt work quite well, first consider this:
-Ns was NOT originally outfitted for STEAM(its considered a "third party mod", so dont expect it to currently work right off the bat. Perhaps when 2.1 is released, Ns will be a lot more compatable with STEAM.

As for now, NS can run pretty decent with Steam, any other problems that one gets from steam can result of out of date drivers and software. My recommendation is:
-UPDATE YOUR FREAKING DRIVERS! would it kill you to spend an hour or so just updating your video/sound/etc drivers?
-Get broadband. Face it, 56k isnt good enough anymore. if your experiencing lag, maybe its time to get broadband.

Any other problems, feel free to message me, i pretty much know how to fix most NS problems on steam. Good luck people, and PLEASE drop WON and convert to steam!

Which is the proper place for this, as though NS is going to be riding on Steam, NS is *not* Steam. *Phased* to Off-Topic.

Plus Steam (standard) download comes with a bunch of mods. I didn't have Day of Defeat installed. I double-clicked on it in the Steam games menu. Five minutes later, I put a bullet in someone with a Bren. five minutes.

My complaint with steam is 3 fold
1.) I didn't need the damn thing for HL1. WON functioned perfectly fine. You want a new system for stuff like HL2 be my guest... WON is HL1's authentication system.... Useless clutterware for an old game who's success they've been riding for years off other peoples hard work.
2.) Patches are downloaded when they are available. What happens when I want to play version x.xx of my favourite mod now? Too **** bad I suppose.... Can't crack out that patch I had archived on my PC anymore....
3.) It had the worst most god awful release in history. It was buggy as hell, and the only way they could fix the cache problem was to release huge files containing the cache versions you wanted.... (Gee that sounds awfully lot like a patch to me ya know)

Valve may be able to make a good game (1 release at last count....), but they are really really REALLY starting to tick me off with a few of their decisions lately....

And not everyone can afford broadband you know....

'Useless clutterware' to replace an authentication system that they did not control, which was going to be shut off anyway. It wasn't theirs. Sierra ONLY had HL authing through it any more, in any realistic numbers. Sierra is not publishing HL2. Valve took the opportunity to KEEP HL-users able to play online with ease, as well as to bring the authentication system under their direct control. Be happy that Valve is so dedicated to their userbase to KEEP a years-old game like Half-Life working. Much less *constantly improve it*, as they have been, responding to modmakers' needs. Certainly, the mods have kept it alive. But it is Valve that has helped those mods reach new levels of immersion and stability.

Second only to WON's instigation, when you had a 3/4 chance of not being able to play, as the servers were down more often than they were up. Amazing how people can forget the frustration, after a system has had literal YEARS to work out the bugs. And STILL will occasionally go down. Steam had a bad opening of *two days*. Then again, some people might not have been _playing_ HL at the beginning, so might not remember the months of growing pains.

It only takes one. Most game companies can't even swing that... much less one with the extensability to keep it around for five years after its release. HL has earned itself a spot in the 'Classics' gallery already. It is yet to be seen if HL2 will follow in its footsteps, or crash and burn as technologically superior games are brought out.

Now then, as has been said elsewhere. Anyone in the room who has started a multi-million dollar video game company has earned their right to put out their thoughts on Steam. Everyone simply annoyed at needing to change over is welcome to button up.

So instead of simply creating a new system that functioned the exact same way WON did.... they made Steam, added crap I already had installed on my computer... and then made the process so extremely complicated the weeks leading up to the release noone had a **** clue what was happening (And many still don't)
I will certainly give you the point of Valve supporting the mod community, but what about the player community when it said it didn't want Steam in the first place. For a good quick example the PHL poll had 15000 people who thought Steam was bad and about 1000 who thought it was good....

Where's the page hosting each patch released via Steam in zip or exe form and I will shut my face on this point.

Glad to see they learned their lesson the first time and made it right the 2nd time then...
I did not play Half-life online until about a year after it was released so I cannot comment accurately on this -_-
However I tried for a few days to get Steam working, and simply gave up trying... This was still while I was on 56k, I'm on ADSL now... so I could easily get the cache files... but I'm still going to wait until WON goes down before I convert(So glad it was only going to be a week or two until it went down to iron out the bugs)
    Did I mention compulsory?

They only kept it alive by riding the success of TFC, CS and now DoD... support for the mod community is good, but you cannot tell me 'making more money' wasn't in on the agenda when they bought the mods instead of just continuing to support their development via HL1 patches.... Valve are good, but not as high and mighty as a lot of people make them out to be.... *NUKED.* More things-to-not-be-discussed-here. Yay!

Oh I will convert over to Steam, there is no arguing that. But I am utilising the time I have with WON to it's fullest....

Really. Then please, continue ekeing out every last moment of WON-goodness before it is scrapped forever in favor of an updated system. Enjoy the outdated, exploitable system that has been in place over-long, and will be soon going the way of the Dodo. I'm certain that there is no time remaining to complain about the changeover, if you wish to savor the musty, aging goodness that is WON, while it is still is responsive to requests, spinning its squeaking platters, air wheezing through the fans of the master servers as they shakily totter along, LEDs shining feebly through the cataracted plastic housings.

By all means. Enjoy while you can, before the headstone is put in place.

No, not cheats. I'm not going to expound upon it in a public forum, as it'd only drive a number of those who browse through to 'research' the flaws. Perhaps after it is dead and gone I will comment on this, but not at the moment, where the information could be used for e-ville.

I love Steam. I like the fact I can Minimize my Half-Life games without having to lose sound. I love not having to search for people in servers when I just Right Click > Join Game. I like chatting with people over Steam, it's hella convenient. And I also like that I got Opposing Force for Free when I downloaded it.

its not that steam sux, its just I dont personally see the need for it, I use ASE, know where my friends play and update when I know there's an update. From my POV, it wasn't necessary. But it has been done and there's nothing we can do about it, as Steam doesn't have any major disadvantage for Valve. (and not for the customer neither)

Sigh, do we really have to go through this again? It's nice that "bluiz" has taken time out of his "dayizzle" to give us all a lesson regarding not liking Steam (yes, people shouldn't be entitled to their opinions) but it's been beaten with a stick again and again. People who do not want to use Steam will simply either use it when it becomes mandatory, or leave the HL community (basically my plan, unless some lag issues are fixed). People who like using Steam, get busy using it and shut up about it. I don't care what you love, like, hate, or can't live without about Steam (And I have my serious doubts that many others do either). Steam actually has it's own forums, doncha' know.
