Network Problems On Winxp

<div class="IPBDescription">File sharing over the network...</div> Okay, here's the deal:

<img src='http://www.tomopdam.com/eediot%20network.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

That's how our network is set up. I can connect to the internet on my computer, but i CANNOT see anybody else on the network. I am sure I am on the right work group. I can ping them. I have file and printer sharing enabled. I have LMShosts lookup disabled, i have netbios over tcp/ip enabled. Everybody else on the network has no problems.

Help please <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Are you set to obtain IP? Usually when your computer starts up the router will give your computer an IP address but if it's not set to obtain the IP you'll have problems.

The problem is with file and printer sharing methinks... =/

Just because you can see them dosn't necisarily mean your on the workgroup....When I first set my computer up on a network, I could see everyones computers and I could use the internet, BUT, I could not print. Before you go into anything technical, be absolutely positive that you are on the right workgroup, because it sounded like you were unsure.

    Well, that's why im unsure.

I looked at two computers out of the 4 - one had HOME, one had MSHOME, yet both were able to access the network [i believe]

    so im confused!!!

Btw the two i looked at were computers 1 + 2 on the diagram

    Two things:

Rework the topology of the network a bit. Unless it's a small hub, try putting all the computers into the hub instead of having two directly into the router.

Also, check the settings of your router to make sure they're not denying any hosts access to anything. It might be wise to reload the routers configuration and set it up from scratch.

    EDIT - Spelling

Being the IT/Network guy when my friends congregate for their LAN games...

One step is to make sure you can connect to the net. If you can, your hooked into the central network but you have to make sure you are on the right workgroup. I had the same issue, because they are all dumb and went through the Network Setup Wizard, not caring if we had file-sharing. Check Network setup wizard to be 100% sure.

Without being able to look at your network setup (ala the NSW) I can't be 100% sure.

Okay, i just need to get one thing straight... or a few things...

    a) The network is set up like that because of physical limitations. People were too far away, not enough ports, etc etc.

    b) it's not anything to do with the network OUTSIDE OF ME. There is something wrong with my computer.

    c) I am not the problem-computer now, it has access to the computer, but not the file sharing network.

    d) SmokeNova, if you have windows + msn, feel like Remote Access? Haha. The only problem I can see is, I'm behind a network so it may not be able to connect.

MSN : thomasopdam would be my first part of the email, at hotmail.com

    thats what I said....

    lol

if you are running winxp, right click on ur computer>then click on "rename this computer...">then click workgroup and type your workgroup in. If there are 2 work groups, then I suggest u try testing those two. If I were you, i'd go to your "server" and see what the workgrou is on that because thats obviosuly the workgroup if its the server.... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I tried both, neither worked

I'm pretty sure it's the file and printer sharing or something

    It's so confusing and crap

    ARGH

Okay, couldn't get it to work.

What does anyone reckon about a reinstall of windows xp?

Also, i think this might also be the problem with steam not working "Could not connect to steam network" error

Reinstalling XP is an option, but it may not be necessary. If you can ping them, access the internet, but not see them on the network, you may just have to disable XP's built-in firewall. Another option is to check if My Computer or Windows Explorer will find a computer's shared folder if you force it into the adress bar. Try "\\<computer name, probably has to be in same workgroup>\<share name>"
  • eedioteediot Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13903Members
tried that, didnt work "cant find them"

uhm... how do i see if i have win xp's automatic firewall enabled?
  • AeaAea Join Date: 2003-10-09 Member: 21552Members
You can't disable the firewall no matter what you do, thus you can't do file sharing using the MS stuff, but you can always set up a small WASTE network <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Hmm... bit of a problem I do say... We had this problem at a lan party once, though all the machines were win98. We never did figure out what was wrong, but it didn't really matter. Anyway, in the meantime you can type "\\<i>ipaddress</i>" (two backslashes and then the IP address) in an explorer window and it *should* work.

    to disable WINXP's fire wall:

    1) go to control panel

    2) open NetWork Connections

    3) right click "Local Area Connection", then Properties

    4) Go to the advanced tab, click the box so its unticked

nono, thats the thing... some people on the network i CANT go to, even with \\name or \\ip

i cant see them in network places either. but i can ping them

and im getting the "Could not connect to steam network" error in steam. My brother didnt have this problem [so the problem is with my computer, not open ports on the router]. I don't have a software firewall.

The microsoft auto firewall is disabled, has been the whole time.

...unless your brother is on 192.168.1.1 (or whatever). Many routers default to forwarding incoming connections to the first usable IP address in whatever subnet they're DHCPing out.

    Hm

So how do i 'fix' this?

I'm not worried about the file sharing thing much anymore - if i need to get stuff off it, my sister's computer can be the "middle man" [shes the only computer i can see, but still, its enough]

    what i find annoying now is steam <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well I found this for the filesharing thing. Not sure if it helps: <a href='http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=142947' target='_blank'>http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php...threadid=142947</a>

As for 'fixing' the Steam thing, if it is being done the way I think it is you'll have to reconfigure the router to give you the first address. Unless of course there is a way to get steam working with NAT routers.... if not, then BOOO VALVE!

I've heard this "Make sure you've got the right account" Thing from one or two places...

The error i get when i try to see the computer [i.e \\HIS IP ADDY, which i know his is address for sure] is that it cant be found. Is this the same error for "incorrect login" or something? Anyway, i have no idea about the accounts thing. Clueless.

edit: btw yeah im looking at the forums right now in case u didnt guess <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

edit x 2: yeah, but my brother wants to play as well haha.... :|

I dunno, I'm trying to be helpfull without taxing my brain too much <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Seriously though, I don't use XP so I'm just shooting in the dark here.

RE: edit 1: I kinda noticed.
RE: edit x 2: Well then you might be screwed, sorry. Blame Valve for not implimenting steam to work through a NAT router. (unless of course they did and I never heard of it before.... which is likely).

Edit x 3: BTW, Talesin, are you just going to sit there or are you gonna help this poor **** already!? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

i bet youre just sitting there going "Heh heh heh... I have the antidote... but you shall not see it! Muwhahah"

I will ask around about the NAT thing... seeing as im incompetent <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
