Ping Concerns

I've been playing NS with 56K for about 8 months and my average ping was 180-250 and this was easily playable.

Now tonight i've just recieved my broadband package (512k) and i've got it all installed etc. It's fast for web browsing and downloading, but i've just connected to my regular NS server to have a game thinking i'd be laughing with a 50 ping or something, but to my horror it's 400+! It's extremely laggy and unstable with the ping going up and down like a yo-yo.

I've got my rate at 6000, which is what i was recommended by someone for my connection speed.

So my question is obvious, why is the connection only slow when gaming? I could understand it if my download and webpage loading was slow as well, but it's not, so it must be something to do with the game settings?

Does it have anything to do with when you install Half Life it asks what connection speed you use? In which case, will i need to reinstall since i selected 56k when i installed it?

I really have no idea what is wrong.

Please help.

P.S i'm running a Pentium 4 1.8Ghz with 384MB RAM.
