I don't think NS was first at making a FPS/RTS hybrid. While that game might have been the first, I don't think it is. I've seen quite a few before this one that had at least a little bit of RTS/FPS gameplay. It just makes your product sound cooler when you say something like: "This game is pioneering a new gameplay mode." I wouldn't look into it too much, if the RTS/FPS mode becomes popular you will have mainy companies claiming that they made it first. (though NS will always be first on my list )

I realize not many bother with the off-topic forums, but that's where this truly belongs

I've played it a bit, and here's my mini review:

The technical aspects of the game are well done (graphics, sound, etc.), except for the netcode, which is terrible.

The gameplay... well, there's no real depth compared to NS. NS requires a huge amount of thought and strategy. Savage does not... It's basically hack-n-slash your way to the enemy base, and keep building garrisons. The maps aren't really hugely differing, and the weapons come in two varieties: click like mad, and hit them, or the basic mg-flamethrower (a crappy one)-bow and arrow-sniper "rifle" (really just a super-bow... with a scope for some reason). The three levels of each are basically the same thing with more damage.

It was very well done technically (though the netcode stunk, which is really too bad ), but the nerfed up the gameplay aspect.

Course, that's my opinion, some people seem to love the game

As far as I know Tribes is the first RTS/FPS game. It may not seem like it was but if you had somebody useing a command consol you could give orders in the same fashion as NS.

No, there were earlier RTS/FPS hybrids.

And for more information, please see the thread in Off-Topic on precisely this subject. Since there's already one there, and this'd just be a duplicate...
