Help me Ooby dooby scooby kanoobie
Ok, so my cousin helped me put together my PC. This was about a month, two months back.
Now, a GeForce FX5200 8xAGP ain't too good, but it should be able to run Halo with lowest settings at more then 5 FPS in abig area...but it doesn't, so I think my cousin screwed up the AGP connection and has it set to run as PCI.
is there anyway to tell? I just ran the Savage Demo and it said "Your graphics card is currently in PCI mode. Please see Blah blah blah for help".
Help me! I want this beast (ok, it's a small beast) in AGP so I can run Halo goshdarnit!

it's so aggravating. because it was 8x AGP but I don't feel like taking apart my computer. is there any diagnostic tool to find out if it's PCI or AGP right now?

I had the same thing with the Savage demo. I suggest you read the document it tells you to read (EDIT: It's called "Important Performance Information" on your start menu.) and that will give you instructions on how to make your card get recognised as AGP rather than PCI.
In my case, however, i'd forgotten to install the AGP drivers for my motherboard last time i reinstalled so it was picking up my GF FX as PCI too, it really does wonders for your fps once you correct this...

It's impossible to plug an AGP card into a PCI slot, it just won't fit, and visa versa.
If you bought the card as AGP and you suspect your friend plugged it into the PCI slot, I doubt you'd see anything at all on your monitor. Actually I'm 100% sure you would get zero monitor response.
Mine was set to PCI for some time yet it still ran. Changing it to AGP made little to no difference tbh.
What processor do you have? Your FPS is more dependant on your processor than your graphics card. I upgraded (well, technically I fixed the old one...) from a 1050 to a 1500 and went from 20-30fps to 40-50fps.
When I went from a Radeon 7000 to a 9700 pro I went from 40-50 to 60-80.

The only way that would work is if he filed it down...
I have a Pentium 2.4 ghz type B (533 FSB), with a GeForce FX5200 64mb (I forgot I was buying a 5200, not a Ti4200) and 512 single-channel DDR Ram. Now Halo runs @ 30 fps on my friends computer, 1.4 ghz Athlon, 512 dual channel DDR and a Radeon 9600 ( I think)
I updated my Intel graphics setting stuff, I updated my NVidia drivers. It's in an agp slot also. I checked. twice.
Now i'm just gonna try and update the mobo driver.
640 x 480 resolution
low everything
no to everything that's a check box
and that's it. I'm gonna re-install my NVidia drivers so I can use the Nvidia center thingy.
Pentium 4 2.4ghz Type B (533 FSB)
Single channel 512 2700 DDR Ram
40 gb Seagate 7200.7
Chaintech GeForce FX 5200 64mb DDR

No. Your video card was not 'set' to PCI.
Most BIOSen contain a switch to select which to use as the primary display adapter, if you have an AGP *and* a PCI video card installed. This is because it defaults to using the PCI one on most mobos, for some wacky reason. You cannot 'set' an AGP card as PCI. :b It Just Don't Work. And I must say, I'm tempted to add this to my big book of tech support forehead-slaps.
Honestly, the best thing you can do is to patch Halo. Or buy a better video card... the FX5200 is outperformed by a monkey on a tricycle in most cases. Even a GF4MX440 will outperform an FX5200 in most instances. An R9600 (much less a Pro) outperforms an FX5600, and in *cough* certain games, will keep up with an FX5900 Ultra. Don't expect too much out of your video card. It's a budget part.
(Radeon 9000, for example.)
I'm looking into the 60-120$ price range.

Hmm... radeon 9600 pros are popular.
