need some help
SO i got steam running today... and tried it out... however i am totally unable to communicate it seems...

Tried this on two different servers...

If i use type or team type.. and type what i want to say and press enter... just like in WON version... the thing i typed disappears, but never shows up on screen..... I figured it might be just that what you say doesent show up any more, however i typed all kind of can you hear me, please respond, say hi to me ect messages... and NO one answered me, and i never got any of em to show up on my screen...

Tried to use my microphone, the little thing comes on like its transmitting.. but no one answered my testing testing... can anyone here me which i did for 5 minutes straight....

My mic might have been a fluke, but i DO know nothing i type ever showed up on the screen, a problem i never had with WON

Im not bashing steam, just wondering if anyone knows how to fix this??

This particular problem has nothing to do with Steam.

Can you see the text of other users?

Are they very communicative people? Chances are they're just people who ignore you, I've come across some myself. But, test it in a game where you know people are talking.

It could be that your text is showing up to them and they are not responding, like pjofsky said. It may just be that your game won't allow you to see text, but that you still actually typed and entered whatever it was you may have said.

Yes, sometimes on steam my chat cuts out to, but I can still use my mic.

It seems like it does it with really high ping servers and after a really big lag spike.

I picked up the ns-steam-beta patch and playing for a while, it seems that has fixed the problem.

the thing that is weird tho is i will type the message, press enter to "SEND" it... but it never shows up in the chat window area.

Yes i can see the text of others... just not mine.

Is this normal for steam?? i think i should at least be able to see my messages if it were working properly..

This steam beta patch.. where do i get it?

It's in the public beta forum.

I find that this is the case with myself as well...not only can i not type, but i cannot switch weapons either. I though steam was supposed to save your configs, but i dunno. It seems as if nothing works correctly on it. I have the tfc version, since that's the only other mod i play, but that works fine. Yet, for NS, i can't change weapons, my fps takes a hard hit, I suffer a LOT more latency, and i can't type/use my mic at all. And when i use steam to find NS games it comes up with about 40 as opposed to the 400+ i find on gamespy.

I say i will not be using steam until they specifically make it for NS...What i'm not a fan of so far about steam is this:

-I just spent time downloading a 250+ mb file in order to play a game that used to work just fine. NOW, it has rendered my NS installation pretty much useless.

-No one has YET been able to express to me what EXACTLY steam does, or is for. I understand it has vac (or will have it), will provide software updates without me having to specifically download them, but you know what? I didn't really have a problem with all that before anyway.

-I think it is absolutely ABSURD that i am forced to download this HUGE program in order to continue playing my games online...i mean isn't anyone else just a little t'ed off by this at all?

And this is what i'm talking about. Instead of just informing me, making me less of a steam newb, i get sarcastic remarks, from those that perceive themselves has higher and mightier than i. From your tone, i gather i should be paying my dearest respects to you fellas...super.

I KNOW for a fact i'm not alone on this steam subject...so exuse me for being such a "llama". I'll be over here waiting for an actual response. kthxbye.

Steam's basically an intergration of a server browser, messaging system, update centre and game client in one package.

you'll always have the latest updates when they come out, and i think this is valves plan to test it with HL1 before they update steam to work with halflife 2.

I'm going to ***lock*** this, as it doesn't seem to be a NS - specific issue. Please use Valves forums for general Steam techsupport.
