Help For A Total Nub Please

I have decided I would like to give map making a try. However, I don't know anything about it. What would be the most nub friendly map editor that you can suggest? I have a couple ideas about the basic layout of a map floating around my head and I would like to give it a shot so any advice you can give would be appreciated.
