New FPSRPG a la Deus Ex
Ok, so today i picked up PC Zone and started going through the cover disc and i found a demo for a game called Chrome. To be honest i've never heard of it before, but i tried it. Wow. This is most definately cool.
From the second you start it up, you're greeted with a very flashy looking 3d menu set in the cockpit of a spaceship, after going through the rather nice menus to customise the controls, i start up into the game. The ingame cutscene that greeted me was a bit wooden, the dialogue wasn't that fantastic, but it was a nice little intro for the mission to come.
You set down on a lush green environment with flowing grass and detailed trees and get spoonfed a little about the interface, but if you're familiar with Deus Ex or System Shock 2, this isn't a million miles away from that. So i set off following my "partner" and take down two guards here, and two guards there. Then you're expected to take down a sniper and take up his position on the tower and give covering sniper fire to your "partner" as he makes a run for the entrance to a moderately guarded facility. And then the demo continues on from there.
From the demo you can see that the models are rather nice, the mapping is excellent and the story is, at the very least, compelling. I am definately going to be buying this one.

The demo is available on the "files" page, i implore you to give it a try.
EDIT:
If anyone else has tried this, post what you think of it, is it as good as i think it is?

According to a review on www.gamingexcellence.com:

I'm running it on a 1.5ghz athalon, 512mb RAM, GeForceFX 5200 on the standard settings and it's running sleek as hell.
The forest and environments are super pretty but the way the play is constructed can be a pain, especially the AI on the catsuit hacker girl ><
annoying guy who comes with you: "hey theres a sniper... take him out"
Gem squints into the distance at the dot firing at them
Gem: "you're kidding right? I've not got anything with a scope on it and none of these weaps seem to hit him"
Taking the initiative Gem runs towards the sniper using the trees as cover... which the sniper mysticallly sees through somehow and still keeps hitting until Gem finally makes it behind some rocks
That sniper is supernatural. Almost never seems to miss and things that obscure vision don't work! You have to cover behind solid stuff or he still somehow hits you even in the middle of a forest.
Oh and the ragdoll system is based on rubber; I shot one guy and he fell back before bouncing several feet in the air o.O
And yeah that sniper you have to kill is annoying, he misses like 1 in 15 shots, and I ran around for a good while because I couldnt even see where he was shooting from.
Graphics for outdoor areas aren't half bad, but kill the framerate on my GeForce2 GTS if I have anti aliasing enabled.
AI is average to below average, and uses rather obvious waypoints even for things that shouldn't be scripted. Sniping is as easy as holding your crosshair over a known path and clicking as you see heads go through it.
Shotgun is worthless. Firing from behind waist-high cover at a rifle-wielding enemy no more than 6 feet away, you can try 3 or more times quicksaving and quickloading and you'll find yourself losing with the shotgun consistently.
Augmentation system rips off too many other games (dermal armor from Deus Ex, bullet time from Max Payne). For those that don't know, the augmentation "progress bar" drains with more and more augmentation use, makes your screen go black when used up (justified by sensory overload), and automatically refills when no augs are in use. This turns the game into quicksaving before a room, blowing through it as quickly as possible with all necessary augs on, hoping you finish before your screen goes black and you get shot up. When done, wait for the bar to fill back up, quicksave, and move on to next room. Tedious and repetitive.
Vehicles could be fun if my outdoor framerate was acceptable and they gave you more than a 50 yard stretch to use them in before the demo ends.
[edit]For the record: my reason for disliking this game has nothing to do with me not liking Deus Ex or System Shock 2. On the contrary, my liking both of those games so much may be part of why I consider this "Chrome" to be such absolute junk by comparison.
I also got all the way to where you help catsuit girl until she ran and opened a door while I was still picking through the bodies and got herself shot -.-
I just found the augmentations kinda novel but useless; you can easily get through all of the fights without them and if I did bother using them it was only the bullet time so I had an extra second or two to adjust my aim
You can't compare in to Deus Ex and System Shock 2, it's just a FPS with a few character updates and basic inventory system, and, after playing the demo, I can safely say that it's a mediocre game that smacks of unoriginality.
Half-Life 2, hurry up please! We need your divine presence!
it's like.. there is nothing in the game that makes me wanna play it you're a mercenary and you want money... and that's about it... i should have gone for homeworld2 instead :/
Thanx for the reviews about it everyone, I was considering downloading it and playing it, but I think I'm gonna go play Halo instead now.

Me and a friend are beating it on Legendary! HA!
As for Chrome... "I'll pass Fox." - Falco, Star Fox.
GF2+anti-aliasing=bad
In fact anything modern on a GF2 just shouldn't be done.
Its....not very entertaining. I don't like it
Cons: Everything else. Including the voices match faces like an Chinese-English movie translation, some of the weapon models are just plain fugleh, assault rifle sound is WAY to quiet, almost silenced... also, what really got to me was the single-tone voices, there was no change really.

I'll beat it on Legendary sometime, but not before I upgrade my comp sometime soon. I want it to be fully brought to its Halo graphics glory before I go into story mode (don't ask why though, I havn't figured that out yet).
For some reason it doesn't look as good as it probably should on my comp, I know it has something to do with needing better cards and ram and such, but I can run UT2003 at high settings and still not see much lag.
I ended up throwing a grenade through each door i encountered, then going prone and crawling up to it to open it.
Multiply that by 30x for the number of doors in a facility. And then remember that the outdoor areas are good to look at but utter bung to try and enjoy actually getting into a fight in. And save yourself $50. Engine's great. Game is crap.
Halo £30
An extra controller £25
Doing the Silent Cartographer Beach Assault with a friend on legendary, Priceless
lol ill tell ya what i think soon
No offense but this is probably a few months old. I d/led the demo from File Shack. Feels like a OFP Doom 3 to me haha.
Oh Shrike, thought about using the implants they give you if you got them? If worse comes to worse...cheat. lol
You might be completing it on legendary with a friend liku but I completed normal on my own with framerates hitting 10FPS in severe battles. How's that for mad skillz? ~makes faces~
I'm hoping gearbox/bungie pull a 'system shock 2' and patch in co-op later... after they fix the framerates and netcode that is =3
Oh and I have to play 640x480 or else that video clip from the dead guys helmet goes all freaky and unwatchable o.O
