Steam Kill Ns?

Hey guys I'm new to NS and am by no means a computer genius but at the same time I'm pretty computer savy compared to the average individual. I've been trying to get NS running but it seems I have to bend over backwords just to get it up. I've still been unable to get into a game because of problems with steam and there hardly seems to be anyone playing on any servers. I know when NS first came out there was a huge community surrounding it with many active players.
It seems to me that steam has just killed NS by making it so unuserfriendly. Am I wrong here? Is there some way to go about finding full servers where everyone is playing that I just don't know about? I can't imagine being your average computer gamer and trying to get NS running, it would be a nightmare. Hell, I still can't really do it and I know a thing or two. If there is something I'm missing please tell me how to easily get NS through steam to work and find populated server! BTW is there an irc channel to find pugs for NS like in CS?

And here is a detailed explanation of, how to install NS with Steam. Enjoy!
oop!: oh and hi! ^^
~gives cookie~
Fingers crossed.

...though now you're probably better off using this 2.0 steam install rather than just porting over the folder and having to fix lots of stuff like that thread mentions =/

It should be noted this works fine if this is your first install. If you've already installed STEAM and are experiencing the classic console error messages and resulting lag and unplayable commin' then go here and download the ns_spr_fix.zip which will fix you up.

QUOTE

Thanks for the steam link but what about the servers? Are there just only a handful? Because I can't seem to find any with people playing really, maybe like 3-4 that have more than 14 people.

Indeed there are few STEAM servers by comparison. I converted my Win32 server to STEAM when it was first released, but got tired of the bugs and low traffic so I reverted back to WON, where it shall remain until WON closes it's doors.
BTW, I'm currently using Steam.
P.S. I'm hardly a genius, but I managed to get NS working in Steam on the first try, no errors or anything. *shrug*
WON and STEAM are game-authentication systems.
won looks at your cd-key to see if it is a valid form or registration. this meathod currently doesn't require internet connection to authentical (aka lan games)
Steam is the "way of the future", where you can have advertisements, updates, instant message chat and game/file verification all built into one.
once the WON system(s) go down, there will be no way to play NS online without the use of steam. although lan games using WON will still work, online matches will not.
-=] now for some 100% known facts [=-
NS 2.1 will not be released for use on won.
ugl needs to fix their downloads page
i need somone to send me those sprite fixes because i know a large amount of people that would like to use them.
I'm currently using steam and need to get into WON where all the NS games are hopefully hiding.
Can anyone tell me how to get there??
