it's BF1942 with a different time period...I'd rather sacrifice to the greater gods of the world and get Halo patched so it runs well.

If you want to fly a huey - just download the excellent mod Eve Of Destruction for battlefield 1942. Frankly I think EA should fix the original product instead of just creating another game that could easily be done, and has been done, with a mod.

Got netcode? Nuh hu.

WTH Nova, did you you get a haircut or something, you seem .... different.

since CWAG is leaving...I decided I had to be the resident OT/Discussion Communist. A forum just ain't a forum without a socialist.

[edit]

and did 1942 have the worst netcode ever? It's so buggy and the lag based vehicles make riding as a passenger hazardous.

must go

CS is calling

We should bad together Doom, and re-enact scenes from Apocalypse now
• Smoke_NovaSmoke_Nova Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8697Members
That would be quite hard.

as BF:V will probably require 5 patches before it's playable online.

but it would be cool.

I can even get the Ride of the Valkyries.

You can get Ride of the Valkyries right here.

Eve of Destruction I cant believe you guys call yourselves BF1942 fans yet havent heard/played it.

Marine, you do know Ride of the Valkyries is the song they play in Apoc. Now?
• Marine0IMarine0I Join Date: 2002-11-14 Member: 8639Members, Constellation
Yes - but when you are in a huey in EoD and you use alternate fire, the radio starts playing the Ride of The Valkeries.
• Smoke_NovaSmoke_Nova Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8697Members
ahh. I uninstalled BF1942 because SP got boring and multi-player doesn't work with my college firewall.

that's why I don't have EoD.

BF1942 doesn't have sp. it has botmatch. that's not sp. So there. :P
• Smoke_NovaSmoke_Nova Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8697Members
it has SP, the campaign. You go through and fight each WW2 battle.
• DOOManiacDOOManiac Worst. Critic. Ever. Join Date: 2002-04-17 Member: 462Members, NS1 Playtester
I thought it was just MP w/ bots?

And besides, BF1942 is an ONLINE game. I mean any notion of not playing online is just silly. Even if it does have something w/ a storyline. :P

Oh and BTW I checked out that Eve of Destruction mod. Wow. That one really is great! So damn fun to be in a Huey!

Although I noticed they didn't make it easy to fly the copters, so the mod suffers from the same fatal mistake (one of the many) that Desert Combat suffers from. You shouldn't need 47 hours of practise to not crash instantly. Sure it isn't "realistic" but WTH, its a video game. You're meant to fly it w/ a keyboard and a mouse. Do the bf1942 planes take 47 hours of practice to not crash in? Hell no. Maybe that much time to be GOOD in them, but certainly not that much time just to get the basics of flight... Tsk tsk tsk...

LoL flying a plane and flying a copter are two completely different things, one is way more complicated than the other.

Word to the wise, dont uses your mouse for flying a chopper - they dont really take THAT much practise anyway. Just be gentle, dont ever go hard in one direction or you will lose control. Take it slowly and chopper flying just comes naturally eventually.

If you have a look at the basics of helicopter flying, its sooo much more complicated then flying a plane. You have two propellors to control, the overhead rotor and the tail rotor. The tail rotor stops you from spinning around like a mad man, and to turn the chopper you either speed it up or slow it down. To go up, you just hold it level and pump up the thrust - to go forward you have to dip the blades and pull yourself through the air.

Compare that to "thrust to go forward, less thrust to go slower, just point in what direction you want to go" of aeroplanes, and you really shouldnt be surprised its harder. Can you think of an easier way to control the chopper? Please share

But its a video game. It shouldn't be so damn hard. YOu shouldn't need to be a certified pilot to fly a Huey in a damn video game...

And as far as not using the mouse, how the hell am I supposed to go foward/backward? meh.

to go forward, press the UP key a bit, that will lower your nose. Then press W to accelerate - that will bring you forward. To slow down, simply hold S, or tilt your nose back while accelerating.

You pretty much have to understand the basic principals behind flying a chopper. These principals are a bit harder than those of a plane.

So when flying, have your right hand on the up,down, left, right keys, and fly those as if your in a plane, and have your left hand on aswd, and use those as if you were on the ground. A and D slide you sideways, W and S control thrust. Use the direction keys to control direction. If in doubt, dont panic, just slow down a little and dont press really hard on anything.

Id join a server and give you lessons, but im in Aust and it has that damn autokicker thingy based on ping.

And believe me, thats about as simple as you can reduce chopper piloting too - I doubt BF:VN will have a better system.

I was going to buy BF1942 (I still play the demo) but I'll probably wait for this.

Anyone ever play Vietcong? Crap demo, superb game. BF: V seems a bit like that except on a larger scale.

I don't know about you guys, but flying a chopper was actually harder with a joystick then a mouse. Before I uninstalled BF1942, I practiced DC with Hind/Apache flying with a mouse. The Acceleration key brings you up in the air. You hover there, slightly lopsided because you WILL move the mouse. Ease the mouse forward a little bit to move forward. With the choppers, it's all just a degree of moving the mouse VERY little. When you start to roll, use the strafe keys to correct by pressing Strafe (direction of roll) and moving the mouse gently opposite way of the roll. Aiming, you don't really do well until you've practiced just flying for like 2 hours. but generally primary fire (Desert Combat) will hit anything in your general aim radius, and secondary fire will take out tanks & AA sites.

The only way Battlefeild Vietnam could fail is if I couldn't be the door gunner in a Huey, firing like mad and yelling "GET SOME, YEA GET SOME"
