Bug With Onos?

Gore?
I thought that jetpacks were supposed to be the counter to onos, however the range of gore makes jetpacks pretty much useless..
I was capturing pipeline hive as a marine, and an onos comes in and starts killing everything.. I fly to the top corner of pipeline, I am touching the ceiling, and the onos comes up, jumps and hits me with gore.

Is the range seriously messed up? Or are onos supposed to be able to kill jetpackers on the ceilings..?

Just to let you know, this has been discussed before.

But yes, for some reason or another, when facing an upwards direction, both Gore and Devour have much greater ranges.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing (if you play Kharaa most often like me). Its pretty fun to chase a Jetpacker through some tight halls with him hoping to get to the large, open room at the end, only to be devoured as he takes off thinking he's home free.

I used to play aliens a lot but kinda stoped, but ya when I actually -did- go onos (I was more of a skulk player/builder) the range was a bit bleh when aiming up. I miss being able to paralyze JPs when they were really high up though...

Not really a bug. I'm pretty sure that the range for Gore/Devour is measured from the Onos' perspective, which is pretty high up off the floor. Naturally if you measure that range(which is long enough to reach the floor a little ways in front of the Onos) upwards from there it's going to go pretty high.

    EDITED TO AVOID CONFUSION

The animation in HLMV will show the Onos really jumping up - the range is scarily large. Vert height looks good, and horiz distance is very close to Devour's anim.

I don't think the gore range is "huge".... there's a vertical height bug with devour afaik but generally the range is pretty close to the animation for the Onos in HLMV (please note alien attack animations aren't played for the Onos, you DO NOT SEE IT INGAME). I'm not sure if the vert height thing extends to ALL attacks though. The onos is a bloody big model and its animation goes over well over its stationary height.

If you're in an average corrdor, its sort of tough luck, but if it was something like being gored on the roof of refinery hive, then I'd say there's a problem.

Humourous range based anecdote - some rine was running from me, he got in a lift, hit the button, thought he was home clear, and I sucked him out of the lift and into mah belleh through a vent sized gap as it was going up. Sheer massive pwnage fun.

Hey, is Flayra working on 3rd person animations for the next patch or something? I thought I heard about that somewhere.

ya it really sucks when you've tactically owned an onos with a lvl3 jp/hmg but it doesn't matter because he can devour/gore you from miles away (exageration for effect). JP could be a really great counter to onos if something were done about the range. I'm sure it will be addressed in a patch soon.

Jetpackers don't have to be above the onos to waste them. I would not like to see the range of the onos go down, they balanced very well as is, and wouldn't need changing unless something big changed on the marine side as well.

Read the stickied changelog thread, the onos devour range bug will be fixed in the next patch (SO STOP WHINING ABOUT THEM!)

Its the vertical range thats a problem, if that was fixed I would have no complaints about the onos.. that just seemed kind of weird, as jp's were supposed to be the counter

And that's exactly the bug that's getting fixed.
  • devicenulldevicenull Join Date: 2003-04-30 Member: 15967Members, NS2 Playtester, Squad Five Blue
OO.. whered it say it was getting fixed? I didn't see it in the changelog
  • NecrosisNecrosis The Loquacious Sage Join Date: 2003-08-03 Member: 18828Members, Constellation
I believe Revenge is talking about devour.

But isn't this thread about GORE ?

Somebody else mentioned devour and I was responding to that.

Seeing as it seems to be exactly the same bug I assume fixing one will end up fixing the other...

dont worry guys even after the bug is fixed u all will get a chance to sit in my belly from time to time in game

Just a thought, if an Onos reared up and stood on its hind legs it could probably hit something fairly high up. Yet it couldn't magically stretch forwards, thus it does seem realistic that it can hit enemies above more easily than enemies far away.
