Router Problems...

...need help!
I figure there has to be a few smart people, and since I've been trying to fix this for a while, I may as well ask you guys for some help.
Okay, so about a month ago I bought a DLink Di604 4 port router so that me and 3 roommates could share one cable internet connection. The problem is, it keeps suffering from severe packet loss. When I play ns, I have a ping of 200 and spike (quite often) to 2-4000 with all four of us connected. They have no downloads going, just Messenger and general internet surfing (at most). Downloading even websites is hit and miss, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes nothing loads but white screens of death.
I do know it is the router though. The cable modem plugged straight to my computer gives me a 50 ping in NS that hits 70-80 at most. Going to the router then me, with no other roommates causes a gain of 50 ping (avg) and I get spikes up to 700ish. Each additional roommate connected is about +50 ping to my game, and with all connected (no downloads, just connected and maybe MSMessenger) spikes of 3-4000. I'll note that the spikes are less prevalent (but still there) during the nights at like 3am.
I have run ad-aware on all of the computers, and we are for the most part up to date on antivirus. I've updated the routers firmware. I've followed the installation instructions to a "t". I just don't get it. Networking is new to me. And DLink support (canada) hasn't responded to my email. I've taken the thing back to the store and had it replaced, and I'm close to taking the new one back and getting my money back (then giving my roommates there 50 bucks each back and let them get there own damn net connections)
But I would really like to get this to work.
It sucks having to unplug the guys just so I can read the forums or checkout penny-arcade... and it really sucks having to unplug everything and connect straight to my computer so I can play NS. I really want to play against them in games too!
That's all I can think of to tell you. If you need more specific info to diagnose, just ask what you want to see. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!
