ooh, sorry to hear that... how did she get these... ailments?
• OttoDestructOttoDestruct Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7790Members
Her hearing went a looong time ago. Then about 6 months ago she had trouble moving her back legs. Took her to vet and he said it was an inflammation of the spine, nothing much he could do but try antibiotics. They didn't work so it just started progressing. Eventually they didnt work at all, then about two weeks ago it progressed to her front paws. About two days after one of her eyes just got this film of pus over it, really nasty. Couple days ago the other one went, but she was half blind without the pus already. Really sad to have to put her to sleep, I'd rather she have died in her sleep.. er.. you know what I mean.

:(

sorry to hear that man.

We recently had to put my dog that we've had for about 12 years to sleep, as he too developed the paralysis thing. Definately sucks.

How old was the dog? That sucks.
• OttoDestructOttoDestruct Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7790Members
She was a little over 16, which was actually pretty old for her breed (bichon frise).

I think I would be horribly depressed if my dog died, he's a yellow lab and he is totally attached to me. He follows me around the house everywhere, sleeps next to my bed, goes nuts just at the sight of me getting home, and gets the saddest face whenever I leave. At this moment he is sleeping on my feet under my computer desk

Sometimes he hits my right hand when I'm playing video games on the computer and messes up my aim though, I've died in matches because of it

Ive had 2 dogs, both black labs, that had to be "put to sleep"

but, by saying "put to sleep", it means your dad has to use the gun, I could never do that.

One was just old, the other fell hard on his tailbone and got paralyzed. Its always hard to let a dog go. My dogs are my best friends.

Sorry that you had to do that man.

yeah, but my dad said it was cheaper. when you live on a farm, you have to do what you have to do.

It gets those ailments because its built into the breed. Small, white dogs just dont seem to be designed for life. And its always heartbreaking for the owners because they are usually such attractive creatures. We had to put down 2 yesterday, and we have one in thats probably going to be put down today.

Its always hard to think of things like this right now, just after your loss, but sometimes the best thing you can do is to get another dog. You are not "replacing" your friend, you are finding another one to share the love and affection you formly lavished on that little white dog lying on the sofa. Most people dont feel like it, most people say they will never get another dog, nothing could make up for the last one - but we have never had anyone ever come back after getting another one and say "It was just to early, we cant keep him".

So at least give it some thought.

Ok, bad time for a Marx brothers quote but:

Outside of a dog, a man's best friend is a book. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

Get another pet, it will help. and Bichon Frise are sooooooo cute, but so purebred that's practically incest for them to breed.

IT's kinda sad becuase I know my Boxer of 3 years will only live to be about 8 cause of it's soze.

Stay away from Bichon Freise like the plague, they will break your heart when they die early - and they wont die cheaply either.

Likewise avoid boxers, lovely animals, you can just tell that they love life the way they bounce around when they are little, but after roughly 4-5years they go downhill really fast - start getting lumps all over them and just look really bad.

If you cant really tell what breed yours is, because it is related to half the dogs in the planet, then you are on a good thing. For a great dog, dont go purebred, you cant go past a smaller bitsa (bitsa this and bitsa that) with short hair. Great dog, great personality, low maintainence, and cheap to buy. Heck the local pound should be practically GIVING them away desexed and vaccinated.

Terribly sorry for you, I know what its like. Dogs are one of the reasons I can't believe in christianity (or judeaism for that matter), it's implied that animals don't have souls. And when I think of all the dogs we've had that I can remember, and everything they've done for me, I'm forced to that that if these beings aren't worthy of a soul, nobody is. Please don't start a religious flamewar over the previous statement as it would distract from the point of the thread.

Fires up his Flammpanzer, aims at Skulkbait

Skulk, I work in a vet surgery, and have a lot of Christian ideals under my belt, and I am convinced these animals go somewhere. I'd really like to hear where it implies these animals are soulless? Animals are part of God's original creation, so I like to think they will still be around when we have a new heaven and a new earth.

You know, come to think of it, its just one of those things you hear all the time. Recently I heard alot of it from boggle, that does little for its credibility. Perhaps you should make a new topic in discussions so we can find out the origin of this idea.

Sorry for taking up some of your thread with this Otto.
