Working Out - Some Questions

TeiohTeioh Canadia Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9453Members, Constellation
I am 17, I've already started out on the wrong track as far as health goes but I want to restart and live a healthier life. I am 6'1 and I weigh ~220 lbs and I want to go to 160 (is this underweight?) or 170. Would I be able to do this with a treadmill if I used it for about 4 hours a day? I would also do a complete 180 on my diet, drop pop, go to water and eat only healthy food. . Would this be feasible to do this in 2 months or so? Assuming I use a treadmill, will it just make my legs muscular and my upperbody rather weak? If so, would pushups/situps solve this?

we aint the right people to be talking to

what you should probably do is go to your Doc and ask him about dieting and exersise.

He will be able to tell you what you need to watch, what you SHOULD be eating etc etc etc.

You actualy odn't have to go all gung ho and what not. As a wise man once said:

All things in moderation (cmon, yalls should know that one )

There's no WAY you're going to be on a treadmill 4 hours a day. But when you are performing cardio related excersizes you've got to do them for at least 20 minutes. That's how long it takes for your body to start burning stored fat as energy. I think there's a section on www.soyouwanna.com relating to weight loss, you might want to check that out actually.

220lbs, about 6'1"? Drop to 200 and you'll be considered "In shape".

It's mostly a matter of just eating things in moderation and exercising. Since I came to college i've lost like 10 lbs, even though i sit around a lot more. Losing weight is more just a matter of diet (avoid 3-4k calorie diets), exercising (usually 30 minutes-60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise) and in general just watching what you do. If your bored, don't just watch TV, read a book, go for a bike ride, those kinda things.

Since I'm a wrestler I can answer pretty much everything you need. First, shooting for 160 is unreasonable, if you are really unhappy with your weight I'd go for 180 at the lowest. Dieting, I don't know your diet but if you just drop the fast food you will be AMAZED at how easily it is to lose weight. Everyone seems to think soda is so bad for you, I've come to realize it really rots your teeth but really doesn't harm your physical fitness all that much, as long as you don't dring a 6 pack daily. Eating lots of fruit and veggies helps too, things like skinless chicken still taste decent but are pretty healthy. 4 hours a day on a treadmill is totally unreasonable, if you want upper body strength the only way you're really going to get ripped is if you hit the gym 4 days a week, for an hour of hard work. If you just want to shape up a bit, my coach always tells the weak freshman to get out a deck of cards and do push ups for whatever they draw, go through a deck twice a day. Crunches and bicycles while watching TV are relatively painless while watching TV. The way you're gonna lose weight is with consistancy and intensity, if you start missing days you won't get anywhere, and if you spend that hour in the gym slacking off you're just wasting your time. Take a jog around the block every morning before you go to work/school, it won't take more than 20 minutes but you will see results.

I work out about 4-5 days a week between classes and such....and the key on your diet is to eat healthy but keep the carbohydrates down....this includes dropping most, if not all of sweet foods and drinks...as things with lots of sugar are LOADED with carbs....in short eat high protein, low-fat, low-carb foods....

second working out....running/jogging is the best cardio exercise possible and this is obviiously where you want to start first....also don't do four hours a day that's insane, you'll just burn out if you start too gung ho....I'd say start out running about 10 min. every other day at a slow/average pace then walk about 10 min.....then progressively begin to run longer (it's up to you maybe go up on your running elapsed time about 30 seconds every workout?) this is a good gradual workout...this along with a GREAT diet (notice i said great, dieting is the hardest part ,but think of it this way the more you work out, the more you can eat and still see results) try to eat without starving yourself and slowly work yourself into your workout routine....Also try playing pick-up basketball if you get tired of just running with no purpose....don't worry about your upper body until you get a little of your weight down, as it will be nearly useless until you can do a couple of repititions with your new lower body weight.....so in short, run every other day if possible starting at a 10 min. slow/normal pace...as your time goes on progressively begin to run longer then the key is keeping a regular diet taht consists of good foods then you'll be on your way from there (I'd say when you reach about 200 lbs.) start doing to pushups, situps, pullups....do these at your own leisure as this isn't as important until you get ALOT of your weight off.

I'm not an expert at this or anything, I think you are expecting waaay to much. Trying to do this in 2 months is nigh on impossible. You will burn out. If you want to improve your health, do all the things you are saying just not to that much of an extreme. Make exercising part of your life, something that you do in your daily routine. That's how I started. I was kinda in your situation at one point. Since I've come to college I've lost 20 pounds and now weigh about 160lbs at 6'. Some of this is because I always walk to class (~15 mins) and back instead of take the bus system we have here. Also I have taken up weight lifting and I run 3 miles 3 times a week. Now I feel like I'm missing something if I don't work out (running especially for some reason). Once you make excercising something that you on a regular basis, not something you have to take time out from other things in your life to do, it's easy. I'm not even that hardcore about being all buff or anything, I just want to be healthy.

Just start doing something every night, like walk for 30-40 minutes and run some nights. You might also want to consider lifting weights to build muscle. Muscle burns much more energy than fat even when inactive, so building muscle will help you lose more weight. Eat and drink a little bit healthier and be more active and the weight will fall off, just don't expect miracles. Good luck man, it's not easy when you start, but I applaud your effort.

Thanks guys, it was helpfull. I walk ~45 mins everyday between school, I guess I could jog it but that will be hard in winter to do that, thats why I wanted to know how a treadmill would work. I guess 160 is unreasonable so I am going to shoot for maybe 185-190 by Feb.

There's a rule you should follow - No more then 3 pounds per week. Any more then that is very unhealthy

If you already walk to school, just lessen the amount you eat and try jogging at least part if.

During football season, I lose more weight from sprints than jogging. If you run (well not right off the bat), try running short distances at your fastest. One day do like 10 sets of 20 yard sprints, and then slowly increase.

Speaking of running, I need to run before track starts!

This is kind of far-fetched, but, wouldn't it be cool to have people on these forums run everyday and lift weights and see who get's in the best shape......I think it would be cool

Oh yeah...one more thing. The most logical thing to do is to burn more calories than you eat. I think the hardest thing for people who are tyring to lose weight is being commited....It's easy to say your going to run and workout, but when it comes down to it, lots of people just don't do it...

Actually, reducing your gut has less to do with situps/crunches than you think. You could do the best abdominal exercises every day and still see little to no progress. You'll have strong abs, but they'll be burried under fat. Best way to drop the gut, that I can think of, is aerobic excercises i.e. running/biking.

Another thing I've noticed in this thread is the target weights people set. I put on gut when I started university, gained some 20-30lbs maybe. When I started working it off (mostly just going for runs, 5-8km) I noticed the difference on my body, but not so much in my weight. When I got back to the body shape I wanted I had still gained weight from the original size, but it was muscle, and I looked better. If you're exercising to lose weight, don't go nuts with target weights.

i second this, i've got a target weight i "set" for my diet, but the thing is, i cheat on the diet, just because losting 10 pounds a week isn't something i think is healthy.

i've got 2 targets, the target weight, and the target shape, the target shape comes first, and if i wiehgt 240, but hav the right shape, i'll be happy...

Here's my advice: don't eat so much.

Look, I mean it. Don't stuff your face whenever you get the chance. Don't stuff yourelf full of "low fat" crap, don't think you can excersize your fat off (you can't - anyone who can do that doesn't need to). Just stop eating so damn much!

The more you eat, the more hungry you get. The less you eat, the less hungry you'll actually feel (although drinking a lot instead helps). Don't starve yourself, but the point is to lay off the junk food between meals or to simply eat less food for meals.

My personal advice would be too consider going into weight training as its easier for people with a bit of weight on them to get some buff on them.
Considering I weigh 112lbs and have been trying to put weight on I must annoy the crap out of most of the people in here...
• ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
look, this seems to be another common misconception running around here

weight training != get you in better shape

you will burn about 0 fat doing it, in fact you will probably gain lbs

look, I am some where areound 220 (give or take 5 lbs I havn't had a scale for some time now )
I am not in that good shape but I am rather strong. I can lift weights rather well, and do a decent amount of crunches (and most weight machines can't realy chalange me for leg exersises unless I do pyramids (start out low, do 10 reps, up the plates repeat then lower the plates back down)

If you want to get in better shape Aerobic exersise is the way to go.(trust me it is worth it, I just don't have a meathod around where I live that I like doing, aka Martial Arts)

so yah, eat right, do some exersise (aerobic) that you LIKE!, I realy can't stress this enugh, if you don't enjoy running then it realy isn't gona work, If all else fails go get some friends together and play ultimate or something

Just random things that work:
Running/jogging
Martial Arts (best work out in the world, you will exersise every single part of your body )
Bicycle
Sports that invovle alot of movement (Football, socer, Basketball, Ultimate, rugby (ony if your crazy), lacrose etc)
