<div class="IPBDescription">/me is a nub</div> So, I recently quit school (just couldn't take anymore of that crap! It was looking great, but then it just fell apart.. like on a high level of tetris <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> ) and now I need a job, or my mom won't be able to pay the bills and we'll have to move. I don't really care if we move to a cheaper place, but my mom does. And I wuv my wittle mommy. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'm also searcing for a job the normal way, ofcourse, but I thought I'd check with the nice (err..) ns forumites to see if they know of any cool jobs I might be interested in. Just for the heck of it. It can't hurt, can it?
And that would preferably be a job where I get to work from home through the internet, or where I get a free trip and maybe some place to live (or for less than normal).

Good things to know would be that I'm from Sweden, I speak swedish and english very well, and a little tiny microscopic bit of german. I have next to no working experience at all, cept for building some shelves once and standing in the same spot for 4 hours straigt in a local museum "helping" some hot chick. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I'm good at drawing and sketching, as some of you might know, and could be willing to get even better. Knows photoshop (and paint, but that probably doesn't count), above avrage at mapping but I havn't shown much of my work to anyone. Knows a little c++ and am soonish going to start self learning it or some other language with the goal of becoming very good at it. (tips about getting started with this is also welcome, here or in a PM if you wish.)

Professional mapper would be awsome, or concept artist.. or some kind of designer at all would be interesting. My dream job is ofcourse being a programmer, and nothing is going to stop me from becoming one! Nothing I tell ya! Anyway, thats just some stuff I'm interested in..

The job should be as individual as possible, so I don't want some job where I have to call 500 people a day and go meet them and stuff. I can't handle stuff like that as it will most likely make me snap and go on a killing rampage or something. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Anyway, that's more than I think anyone would like to read.. I'm not sure why I'm doing this. Guess it would be fun to see if anything actually comes up. Though I doubt it. At least wish me luck! I could use some for a change.

Now.. all of you that have read this far is hopefully willing to help and doesn't think I'm lame, or is looking for something to flame, have an unusually high tolerance for boring things, or is just plain stupid, so before I come up with more stupid and boring details:
Posts away! (hopefully nice and cold.) <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

(oh and if you have been waiting for my next natural reflection comic.. I recently had a hdd crash and have yet to reinstall photoshop.)

Don't you need some college to be a programmer...?

Well, usually people who own them have a certificate to show off like on the wall...What will you tell a potential customer when they say "Oh, and where did you get your certification?"

    Just my opinion...

You should go and get a qualification in art (for concept art, it would make you look much better) or programming. At the moment I'm in a simple part-time job since I'm still at school. I think you should do the same. Get a part-time job while at college and after you get your qualification go out and look for a proper job. I'm a Kitchen Porter right now. You don't need to think too hard and you don't need to deal with people (except other staff complaining about the bad job you done <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->)

To work for someone else as a programmer, it <i>really</i> helps to have a degree in computer science. And if I were you, I wouldn't think about starting my own business until you've taken some classes on it, because there's a lot more to it than one would think. But if you already have some experience in Photoshop and like art, you would probably do pretty well as a graphics artist for a website company, or if you're lucky, as a texture artist.

I have no idea what you are talking about. (Maybe a little, but is that something you NEED?) I guess I'll just get some friend to start a company instead and have him hire me. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Sorry, can't.. I'm not qualified for college.. (if that's the same thing as university, if I interpreted the dictionary right) it's the school before I'm having problems with.. (senior high school has the most accurate description in the dictionary, but I'm still not sure about what's called what) you know, the one with all those idiotic classes that has nothing at all to do with your future.. but which you for some reason need in order to get into college to study something that has nothing to do with it what so ever. (why do I need history and swedish, for example, to study programming? die.)
Sorry if I've mixed up something.. if I did, I take it all back (wait.. no I won't.) For some reason, my brain doesn't want to learn the english words for what different schools are called. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yeah I know.. but what can I do? I can't get anywhere near that, even though I know it would be easy as hell for me if I somehow did.

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->And if I were you, I wouldn't think about starting my own business until you've taken some classes on it, because there's a lot more to it than one would think. Actually, I have taken one class on it, and yeah it's a LOT to keep track of.. still don't know if I passed that one though. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Web graphics artist or texture artist sounds good.. happen to know any company in need of one?

I have a great idea for a game, that's why I want to be a programmer to make sure everything gets done right. That's probably my real goal. My masterpiece. Just thought I'd mention that.

(Man, if I write another one of these massive posts.. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> Don't have time to write more now.. and probably shouldn't <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> will be back later.)

Problem is if you were in the UK I would recommend the Open University.
    But you aren't.

    In that case have you considered working for a popular fast-food establishment? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

But seriously see if you can get a part time university course and a bit of side work as well. That seems the best way to go.
  • DreadDread Join Date: 2002-07-24 Member: 993Members
I'm sorry to tell you this but the hard fact of life is that without proper education you have very slight chances of getting a dream job like 'where I get to work from home through the internet, or where I get a free trip and maybe some place to live'.

Prepare to flip burgers for the rest of your life!

Nah, just kidding. You may get some sort of job but not with little 'C++' and good mapping skills. One out of 100 millions gets to map for living. So pessimistically looking, you should either start studying again(it's not too late) or accept that you might not get a fun job with high pay. Construction worker is a possiblity.

    Yes, college = university.

I would recommend first building up a "portfolio" of sorts, with both coding and art. Once you have samples of your work you are much more prepared for jobhunting, and having some good work to show people offsets the lack of a degree. I don't know about anyone else, but I would much rather hire someone who can show me he (or she) is a competent coder, rather than someone who has a degree and thinks that they would do well.

Go to a community college, all you have to be is 18 years or older and you can take strictly co-sci classes.

Ok, your looking for a high-paying job...and you are a high-school (or equivalent) dropout? As it is, at least in the US, if your a highschool dropout your *average* earnings in your lifetime is around 350-400k, in a good economy. High school grad = 600-650k. College dropout, about 650k-700k. College graduate 700k-800k.

If you dropped out of highschool or the equivalent of...your not going to get a specialist position unless you really work hard. A lot of companies will interpret your dropping out to "Can't handle pressure, no work ethic", etc. etc.

Go back to highschool and finish it. NOW. Otherwise you won't get far in the world.

No offence but you seem to be trying to climb Mount Everest with a piece of string and some thumb tacks. I left education after college (UK) which means I have three A-Levels (A reasonably high qualification) and I'm working In a supermarket stacking shelves.
If you're looking for interesting varied work get your **** back into school and get some qualifications under your belt, goto college/uni/whatever you have and then apply to places. If your're serious about supporting your mother and really don't want to go back into education then you're going to have to get practical and look at more run of the mill jobs. Minimum wage may seem degrading (trust me I know) but it brings home enough to live on.
Either that or as BadKarma said join the military, then your mum doesn't have to pay for you, the government does. Thats what I'd be doing if it wasn't for my hopeless knees >_<

Yeah, I'd stick with school.....I read somewhere that a bachelors degree will get you like $8,000 more every year.... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

BTW: What is computer science? Is it just programming, or computers in general?

This is sort of what I was planning to do.. a friend of mine knows a guy that went this way and became very successful. He doesn't really have a job though, he's a freelancing programmer and he gets sponsored and stuff. Cool. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I never said I was looking for a high paying job. Not atm. Right now I just need a job that pays at least 200 a month. I'm a bit shy, so I'm trying to at least find a job not involving talking to, or being near other human beings I don't know. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> (or one that isn't based on it. And yes, I'm not to good with preassure.. depending of what kind of preassure. If someone tells me to go call someone or something similar, I'll go sit in a corner and wish I was dead. If I get told to.. whatever, build a shelf? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> no problem.

Anyway, now I'm writing too much again.. I've found a job that could suit me, where I get an e-mail with some english text attached to translate to swedish and then send it back. Sounds like something I could easily do.

Now I gotta go.. my mom wants me to go and sign up at.. whatever that place is called in your respective countries.. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> you know, that place that finds jobs for you. Hope I didn't forget something.

Anyways, good news! I might just not quit school at all! I had a chat with that woman person thingie earlier (hadn't even told her I was quitting school yet. she's hard to get hold of.. very busy (sp?) person.) and she somehow managed to get me back on track. yay! must have been the fact that she is a very large evil looking woman that you don't say no to. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> (but she's a very nice person ofcourse.)
