Sometimes it's just easier to re-install
There are many STEAM issues covered in this forum, with countless solutions. Sometimes your problem get's fixed, sometimes it doesn't. Do a search first, read s viper3's pinned topic here, then if all else fails, re-install STEAM...it's NOT that difficult
****HOW TO PROPERLY UNINSTALL STEAM****

Uninstall Steam through add/remove programs in your control panel. Then go to the location you installed it and delete the folder to get rid of the config files etc.
Then go to your Half-Life folder and look for two files starting with Steam and a folder called Platform. You may not have these as only twice out of my incomplete installs did i have them. Delete them if they are there.
Go to Start Menu, Run, and type in regedit. This opens your registry. If you don't know what you'r doing here, please leave this alone - it's not essential to remove the reg keys. However, if you do know what you're doing, your looking for two Steam keys under Valve in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER (I use WinXP, I dont know if it differs on other OS's).

This completes your uninstall of STEAM - GOOD JOB!
****HOW TO PROPERLY INSTALL STEAM****

Download steaminstall_cs or steaminstall_full from your favorite mirror. Do NOT bother with the the 500kbs Installer released, its too much hassle to get to work.
Before installing it's advised to make sure you aren't running anything that could screw the install up. So turn off your anti-virus and close IRC or other programs. With the main games cached its very quick.

Run the installer and follow the onscreen instructions. It's ok to use a previously registered account. Do NOT create a new account! Leave STEAM alone...STEAM freezes but is still working in most cases. It can take between a minute and 30 minutes to update STEAM, depending on the server load.
Next we have two routes. After it asks where you want Steamapps installed it can go to, 1) Installation complete or, 2) Choose Games for converting.
1) Installation complete: Steam should load fine, but your games arent activated. To do this goto games and when the game menu loads, right click and select launch on Half-Life or double click it. Please choose Half-Life first, this is because if you choose another one of Valves games in the next step you cant unselect that mod.
It will now load Step 2
2): It will now come up with the Choose games for converting This is a list of all games currently Steamified and includes all Valve games and mods, including the Single Player Half-Life and Opposing Force, Online TFC, DMC and also Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. Since CS and HL are the only ones cached, deselect all but them and click next.

It will now convert say it is pre-loading some stuff and this should be pretty fast, as it was with the other installer. However next, it will goto convert Half-Life, but skip it as it already exists! It will then preload stuff for CS and then skip the converter because its already cached!

Now this is where we locked up before, during the updating and converting of HL and CS. Well leave Steam for a few minutes, maybe make a coffee or beverage of your choice, and hopefully when you come back youll get something new. It will have created the User folder in STEAM and completed the install!

This should complete your STEAM install. Topics already exist in this forum on how to add NS to the list of games (it will appear as third party for now).
