<div class="IPBDescription">The crap and the history</div>Well... you can get a glimpse of what's going on by reading our page before it goes down here: <a href="http://www.xyberclan.net/index8.htm" target="_blank">http://www.xyberclan.net/index8.htm</a>
A little history of my clan(s) may help shed light on this somewhat.
IT all started waaaay back in late 98, early 99. me and my bud (matt) had been getting really into TFC (and just starting to get into gaming in general) and wanted to experience organized competition. so we did what every n00b did and went and joined a clan. at that time our clan's name was nInJa- HLDM and TFC (basically the only multi-player HL games that had ladders and such). we were good, had been in a few matches and won more than we lost, and we were a fair mix of HPBs and LPBs. but we didn't have a server, and would have to practice by invading pubs. it worked fine for a while, but then some politics between the leaders ended up with the clan splitting, some forming a new clan iXo and others staying with nInJa. Matt and I went with iXo, and as luck would have it, that's the half that retained the top players, and actually survived.
iXo was TFC only, which was good, but as time went on, not having a server was a big problem, and we had dicovered another MOD, CS beta 1 (argh!!! damn HL canisters for guns!! )
iXo did a "CS has potential but right now it's crap" so matt and I decided to form our own little clan, Xyber (actually, it was more matt's idea than mine). thing was, 2 HPBs who were good weren't a clan (thou one of the ladders did have a dial-up 2v2 category. why we didn't sign up? I have NO idea) time went on, and as our senior year in High School came around we had 5 people, all 56k dialup users, and out of the 4 ladder games we played we lost 0. and those were all actual wins and not cases of the other clan not showing or whatnot.
NE ways, we after graduation we lost members, and so it was down to a 3 person clan with no ladder activity, just friends having fun (using Roger wilco at the time) playing and chatting.
Then matt's cousin introduced him to a LAN party. every friday night (now it's moved to another persons house, and it's every saturday night), these guys would get together and play evercrack, UT, and quake 3 at a LAN. Matt and I introduced counter-strike, and suddenly we had 5 new members, all LPBs, and ###### if their shakeNbake skillz from UT and quake 3 didn't just keep them up on top of all of the score boards.
after a while, one of our member's (mick) dad (mike) got into computer gaming as a hobby, and set up his old computer as a server for us. really nice, and even though we still weren't competitive outside of LAN tournements, it was still a nice thing to have for a clan. so time goes on, CS gets old, gets new maps, gets cheats, gets lame, blah blah blah, and most of our members lose interest in the game, and stop playing, bringing our membership down to me, matt, mick, mike, and java. not too bad, but our server is there, but not getting any activity. matt and I have spent a LOT of time on clan mage's server because it has stats, a nice page, and is very challenging in general. we suggest, why not setup our server and webpage like that?
well, little did we know how much time and effort goes into making a site and a server of that high quality, yet we did, and we started recruiting people. last time I checked we had 15 some odd people, 4 of whom were in alaska (we're based in St. Pete, Florida)
more time goes on, we still aren't ladder competitive, but skirmish a LOT. of course there's BS with those because it's on one clan's server so there's an immense advantage, ping differences for the LPBs make them think the other team's cheating (which they're not, it's kinds of stuff us 56kers see all the time)
THere never was any real leadership in our clan, we were all friends at the start, but as it grew larger and we got people we didn't know in real life, we decided to make all the "original members" me, matt, java, mick, and mike "leaders" by giving us admin on the server and allowing us acess to post on the front page of our site.
well, due to mick moving across state because of college, me working my ### off this summer, and other things in our personal lives, the "leaders" haven't been playing much at all- hell, even when I go to Rob's house for LAN (the new place where we have it) I don't even fire up HL at all.
But our webpage and server are still up, and mike is playing with the people we don't know in real life, and so what's happened, is mike thinks the clan is still going strong, and the rest of us (me, matt, mick, java) see it as dead.
Now there's some personal stuff going between some of the members that's causing people not to talk to each other, and mike is (as far as I know) completely oblivious to what's going on between members. Thing is, mike wants to hold one last LAN for the Xybers so we can invade some servers and just kick people's ##### in general one last time. if you'll read the front page you'll see that he is unaware of the fact that matt is ###### at his son (for reasons which I will not name), and so is taking it out a little on him.
and so I peer into my crystal track ball and see: Matt, me, and some other friends from ROB's LAN forming a Xyber clan that just is into gaming, and not one particular game; and Mick, java, and mike still holding on to a clan (probably with the Xyber tags still) in teh CS community.
I'm going to the LAN, I know Java and mick are, I'm hoping matt is, as he is the one who got everything started in the first place. what I want to happen is for people's to appologise to each other, set aside their differences, and just have some fun. hopefully it'll be like the old LANs, where mike will grill us some dogs and burgers, I'll show up with the soda nd b33r, and we'll have a good time from 7PM sat till sometime around noon on sunday.
I hope.
but then, that'll probably fly like a tortoise with a fear of heights.
