NS just started to lag one me?
Hi guys! I need advice from the more techy members of the community.

My game is starting to lag when I get around a large group of players. (this has never happened before. I usually only peak between 50-120ms) When I'm in that circumstance my ping runs from about 50ms - 800ms. It just lobbs back and fourth.

I run a cable modem and I have never had any problems with this before. I called my ISP and they said that there was nothing wrong with my line at all. They said something on my machine must be slowing me down. I don't see how this is possible since nothing is running in the background. I even did a virus scan for trojans. There are no p2p or any advertisement programs running in the background.

I recently installed daemon tools and neo burner but that is it. I uninstalled daemon tools to see if that was it with no success. Any suggestions?

This is my system specs:

1.4mhz Amd Thunderbird
512mb SD Ram
64mb SD Ram GeForce 3 AGP
80 Gig Hrd. Drv. w/ 60 gig free
Windows XP pro

Any help would be appreciated....

EDIT: WHY DO I ALWAYS SCREW UP THE SUBJECT LINES!?!? ::SIGH::

Garh.. Usually this stuff goes into the tech support forum but since Flayra just pwned the general discussion and dragged atleast 50% (and counting) regulars that post here into the constellation forum we'll let this slip

On a serious note, I have no idea what's going on there, have you tried reinstalling NS and HL, is it steam or not?

a little tip... restart your modem, and any routers and stuff. unplug em and then plug them in. or you can do it from the computer. go into dos/comand prompt and type

ipconfig /release <---- like unplugging, disconnects internet

ipconfig /renew <---- reconnects, should be faster

i think its something like the modem gets gummed up w too much data or something... this clears it. (like blowing your nose )

    hope this helps.

I haven't tried to uninstall HL and reinstall it. Although it might come to that.

I'm currently NOT running steam though.

I reposted in tech forums too. I understand if this post has to be moved there as well. :/ Just thought I'd getter a better response here.

I have already tried to reset my modem by unplugging it and then plugging it back in. No Help.

I will try the ipconfig release/renew though. I'l keep you posted. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Okay, time for Uranium's intarweb help.

    1) First of all, go into half-life and type 'net_graph 3'. You'll get a little reading in the corner that tells you a few things.

First of all, it tells you your FPS. This, on a system like yours, should be either around 100, or 60. Mine's at 60 because that's my monitor's refresh rate. Basically, any more and I'll get screen tearing. So don't worry if it's 60, you're doing fine.

Next, it tells you how fast you're pinging.

The next two lines, In and Out, tell you your bandwidth usage. This most likely has nothing to do with your problem.

Finally, look at 'Loss' and 'Choke'.

Loss is packetloss. You loose packets when you're settings are constricting your badwidth too much.

Choke is a result of too much information trying to smash through that restricted bandwidth. Usually these two go hand in hand. In my experience, a high choke gave me a high packetloss.

So join a game and find out what the readings are. Anything above 5 is practically unplayable. 0 is preferred. If this is your problem...

You'll want to tweak three settings.

Rate - Try this with various settings, from 3500, 5000, and 7500.

cl_updaterate - This should be around 30-40 for best performace.

cl_cmdrate - Set to the same as updaterate.

    Try that.

BTW: Just out of curiosity, who is your ISP, and where do you live?

I live in Bowling Green, Ky and I have insight broad band as my connection.

Man, my choke varied from 5-50....that is crazy......i wish i knew why all of a sudden this is happening. I'll try messing with some of those settings you gave me....

Wow, I just a couple days ago started having the same problem (and it kept me out of the match vs. evil, which really sucked) - I'll be trying this stuff from home tonight - thanks for the ideas u235.

I'm in Wisconsin on Charter cable, and as a further oddity, I do have steam and both NS and CS work fine with it. Pings from 30-50, no choke. It's bizarre. It just... started sucking Thursday at midnight, right in the middle of a game.

do you have any really long cables that you coiled up (i.e. network cables?) coiled up cables create a magnetic field which can screw up your net connection. happened to me, i uncoiled the cables and it worked better.

Uranium - Thank you very much for the input. I tried the new settings on my lunch and so far there has been a performance improvement. I'll have to wait for a real match to see if it starts lagging on me anymore. Do you have any idea why this happened all of a sudden?? This is very odd indeed.

Ballisto- Actually yes the cable is a bit longer than I would like but it's not really coiled I do not believe. I will try to mess with the cable and see if that helps. But I had them test the line and they said nothing was wrong with it and I'm only getting lag spikes in rooms full of other players. (Which of course has never happened to me before)

This is why I believe NS is such a great community. You guys really help people out. Thanks again. I'll let you know if it keeps lagging.

PS. My choke stayed between 0-10 I believe....It fluctuates (sp?)

Use ad-aware to kill all the spyare.

Disman- I live in Henderson, KY with InsightBB and I have the same problems. My choke has stayed around 0-3 usually on the servers I play, but I still get lag spikes, usually at points where there is a lot of stuff happening. Like skulks leaping at marines that are building a phase gate with a couple of people covering and a lerk gassing. Insight was in a hurry to expand their network and get more customers and they didn't drop all the cables, meaning that some were still exposed for a couple of months. Gotta remember, the BB service hasn't been in this region for too long, so it's rather new. They may be having problems splitting the bandwidth. Just live with it for a bit, as that this has only started happening in the past couple of months for me as well.

Frost - Cool man. Nice to see another NS player so close. My lag spikes hit over 1200 sometimes and I just can't play like that. I was in holo room on ns_hera and we had 5 marines there and a a few aliens. I was so choppy I just had to quit. It was like having 1 frame a second. I called insight and they tested my line and said nothing was wrong with it. :/

I tried other servers with no success before I made the modifications to my .cfg file. We'll see how it goes tonight.

As for the spyware I'll have to check. :/

I live in Louisville Kentucky and have no problems, maybe you need a new modem? new lan card? /shrug Have you tried other servers? maybe someone is pinging you, try getting a firewall... really i don't have a clue why you would lag all of a sudden,

I had this problem once before too. My rate is usually at 25000, but for some reason it randomly got lowered to 5000. That's most likely the problem. If you are on cable, you should easily jack your rate to 15000, if not higher. I was getting like 50 choke when it dropped, and once I popped it back to 25000, back into zeroville.

In general, folks, I'm gonna go ahead and say that it's probably not the NIC or anything like that. See, on Thursday night I started having the exact same problem, except so far as I know, NS on vanilla HL is the only thing that displays them. Download speeds over the web are fine, upload is fine, and perhaps most tellingly, cs 1.6 and the ns:c beta are fine. Either HL, WinXP, or our ISPs are doing something strange.

Setting rate to 7500 fixed it - thanks so much u235.
