Pbly the only real edge HL2 has is the fact it has a HUGE modding community, theres still TONS of Half-Life 1 mods in the making as well or they've switched to HL2. Other than that, I think Half-Life 2 may bust.
Although HL2 kinda has a fixed, complicated, storyline, and is a shoot-em-up game rather than a RPG. From what was said in this thread, Stalker is more about the game than the story. So no wondering "who are g-man's '....employers'? aliens?" or thinking "LOL nihilanth looks like a huge fetus".... and stuff.

Without the mod's, HL1 would have died a long time ago.
But Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are instant classics, and they're great games.
