Won Hit The Crapper, "official" Ns Steam Version?

CowswinCowswin Join Date: 2003-03-17 Member: 14623Banned, Constellation
Hey, it seems that WON hit the crapper (or maybe just our area got taken down, who knows) but I can't refresh with ASE or through any WON server. I'm downloading STEAM again (because I deleted it the first time) and I'm wondering when the official steam compliant version of NS is coming out, 2.1 I believe? Sometime in the next couple weeks? Until then, looks like I'll be working on my own game

(and the point of the thread is...)
What's the rumor on the street of the release date or official date if there is one?

Well they haven't announced it as offical news on their Steampowered.com so perhaps WON was just down for a little bit?

From the main Natural Selection page:

"We are very close to releasing 2.1 publically"

Ugh, guess that means I'll have to update to steam soon.
Anyone else suspect the 31st as the release date... It would be exactly 1 years since 1.0 release.

Hm, so ... ns will lose a good part of it's community ?

A quick, slightly related question - is 2.1 being developed exclusively for Steam, or will it have WON compatibility?

In case you haven't noticed, what Valve says and what actually happens has nothing to do with each other.

I've been having the same problems. I usually wait about 5 mins and hit refresh on my ASE and it works every time. Dunno why this happens but it does. :/

Well, yes, thank you for repeating Coomer's statement.
Let me say it this way: Based on that quote every mod-community consists of 50% non-steamers (actual values may differ) until steam is the only way to go, from then, obviously their community is 100% steamers.
So, when a mod update is released that excludes 50% of it's players from the game, these 50% will either have to upgrade to steam or quit.
While I can image that some of them will consider upgrading, I have a feeling that ns will lose those early that either cannot due to technical reasons (bugs, network environment etc.) or don't want to (bugs, security issues etc.).

As has been stated in countless threads by countless people, NS 2.1 is Steam only.

There is no point to making a WON release since WON is in the process of shutting down. Steam is the new way forward, you have no choice in the matter.

There will be no WON in the near future. So it's pointless to develop for WON.

But it already has an MP3 player. Unfortunately, I don't know how to use it. Would anybody care to enlighten us?

My lag has just recently went to crap when i'm in a large room full of other players. This has never happened to me before. There are a few others with the same problem. I wonder if it is because WON is being taken down and everyone is being encouraged to go to STEAM?

There are several STEAM players who have not complained. So I'd say the majority of people like it so far now that they have switched over. (I have not personally d/l'ed steam so i do not have first hand knowledge of it. I am merely going by the posts I have read)
• taboofirestaboofires Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9853Members
Valve might have just migrated more WON servers over to STEAM content server usage, and took a bit too many away. They did something similar over the summer, and caused all sorts of connection problems for WON players.

from what iv been reading 2.1 will be a officaly supported throught steam meaning all updates will come throught steam and will be just like haveing cs on your computer. i may be wrong but that the way it sounded to me.

Steam actually works pretty well with 2.1 so far. I join servers far faster than I do in CS or DoD. Although Steam does use some system resources, I haven't really noticed a difference (on my system anyways) between Steam and WON, in either ping or framerate. I'm still chugging along at 99.9 fps.

I guess steam running well on anyones machine is not the problem here.
What about those ns players that cannot use the current steam public beta version on their computer for one reason or another ?

When they do eventually close down the WON, I'll be saying; "damn... oh well, time to play some other game."
A month or so later I'll miss NS, and a few other mods; "I guess I should upgrade to STEAM now..."
